Bumper & Hood: Paint or Install first?

I am fixing to get a front bumper and hood, should I install it first or have it painted first?

Which would be more problematic?

What price would I be looking at to get both painted?

Well, they'll paint the bumper off of the car, so might as well leave it off. As far as the hood, it depends upon if you're going to have them blend into your fenders. If they are, then put it on. If they're not going to blend the fenders, painting it off the car would eliminate the chance of overspray, etc.

05GT nailed it. I had my front and rear bumpers, along with the hood painted off of my car. After installation of the parts I had to take my car back so that the fenders and hood could be blended. You might get lucky and get a perfect match, it depends on the color. Mine is silver so the odds were against me from the start. Anyhow, if you do get the front and hood painted off of the car, ask your painter how much he will charge if you have to bring it back in for blending, if needed.

Honestly, it may take some more effort, but I'd always install first to make sure everything fits, then take it off and send it to paint. It would suck to find out that the product was defective and waste your money on painted it.

Well here's how it works. You should spay the underside of the hood (If need be) and the inside edges of the bumper cover. Then the parts should be installed (After they have dried, of course) then the rest should be painted. This way there is paint on all the inner surfaces and the edges of the bumper cover. When the hood and bumper are painted the shop will mask off the whole front end and prep the whole area. Then they will paint (color) the hood, bumper and into the adjoining panels (fenders). Then they will clear coat the whole front end. This ensures that the color is bang on and you will not notice any blends.
I have been a painter for 26 years now.

Okay, so if I am obviously not a painter nor have the equipment to paint a car at all; should I just make sure it fits then take it to a shop and tell them to take it off and paint the underside of the hood and edges first and then wait and paint the rest? How would that work exactly like you described if I have no painting equipment and will have to take it somewhere to have it done?

Take it to a reputable shop that you want to do the work and ask them how they wish to proceed. Don't over-complicate it.
