Just because it is not a DOHC, that does not make it a basic GT motor. Perhaps his choice of "detuned" was somewhat inaccurate but using the GT motor and internals, as well as intake/blower system but with different heads/cams/etc could easily be construed as "Detuned". And, even using a different intake system but still basing the foundation on the Ford GT Block and internals would still easily constitute the Cobra motor as a 'detuned' GT engine.
Detuning does not just mean set-up differently via the computer in my view.
Either way and no matter how we 'lable' it, it sounds like we're definitely looking at a big horse under the hood. And that's very, very good.

"I completely agree with him, non-functional hood scoops don't belong on the hood of a car. "
what about on the roof? ive always liked non-functional hood scoops on the roof.....

I'm pushing him for a pic but he says the show cars (supposedly, Ford is taking 2 to NY) are still being finallized. He did say that finished product will cause everyone - especially the Boys who wear Bowties - to drool.
Makes ME wanna DANCE!

Can you find out from your source... if this is it. Which I believe it is.

Heads, cams, valves are different.
Intake is different
I guarantee that it will not use the GT dry-sump oiling system either.
So the only thing the same is the block, crank, rods and pistons.
I agree with ZX4RME . It's a different engine, not a de-tuned GT engine.
Yes they borrowed from the GT engine, but it's a different engine.
Your info does agree with other rumors that is 3V heads, which makes a lot of sense.

Y'know its kinda interesting, people dont seem to mind if the new Cobra powerplant has only 3 valves and 1 cam per cylinder bank, but the lack of an IRS would be a major stumper it looks like.

ya, about that whole live axle thing... people upset about the cobra supposedly not getting a live axle (motor trend was only saying this about the Shelby Cobra, maybe something else will get IRS) should just chill and take a look at this picture:
mustangs finished 1st and 2nd in the Grand Am 200, ahead of a couple dozen M3's and Carreras and so forth. Check it out in the Motorsports forum.

Have ya'll seen what a GT block looks like? It is extraordinarily beefy. I'm a bit skeptical, but it would be really nice if Ford uses it in the Cobra:
FYI...those are not the stock pistons.

My source tells me that it still is planned to offer the IRS as an option over the Live Axle, OR, that the IRS will be standard with the Live Axle Option a credit/deduct.
He says that the IRS is definitely NOT dead for the Cobra. I hope he's right.

What mods do the Grand AM 200 cars have, if any?

I don't really care if it has 3 or 4 valves as long as it still kicks A**. and I'm sure it will.

This month's Motor Trend has an article about the 550 hp Shelby Mustang Cobra, which will have the same supercharged 5.4 DOHC as the Ford GT, and a live rear axle.
As near as I can tell, there will also be an SVT Mustang, possibly also called a Cobra, that will be in the neigborhood of 400-450 hp, and have the IRS as an option.
