When/how do I replace/clean my C&L filter?

When do I need to replace my C&L filter? Can i just clean it instead? If so, what is the best method of cleaning it?

I had mine on for three years and cleaned it once, it hasn't been red in god knows how long... last week i went and got a spectre brand intake from autozone and that is working fine. The car feels much peppier now!

Thumbs up

Spray the inside and outside with Simple Green, rinse with a hose (you'll be amazed at the dirt that comes out of it), let it dry (I just set it in the driveway and let the sun dry it), lightly re-oil it, go tear up the roads

+1. Their kit is great! Comes with all you need (including the oil).

I just cleaned mine for the first time in 40k miles and it wasn't very dirty i just wanted it to look nice and red again, i used the K&N kit, if you live in an especially dusty or dirty area you might do it sooner.

I think the simple green method sounds good as well. I have only 10K on it but do live on a gravel road so it would look much better if cleaned prior to shows this summer.

Is there a "spray" type oil that would work? I would think it would provide more even coverage.

Somebody please share your wisdom...

I take it the K&N Filter kit is this one? http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?Prod=99-5000

How many cleanings will the kit provide? (a guess from those who have used it is fine)

I picked up the S&B kit, same thing as the K&N I think.
I do mine once a year. Everyone will not need it done at the same time. The kits come with instructions.

That's the kit I bought. I've used it 4 times now and still have plenty more uses I believe judging from the weight of the cannisters. The oil is a spray can like a "rattle can paint" - it can be easy to over oil, I use the seam of the filter as a starting point so I know when I have gone around once.

yes you can over oil it. Just a good even coat. if it drips off the filter its to much.

I also always lay/sit mine in the sun for an hour or so before I install it.

Or you could replace it with a dry one - no more oiling: http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/eaau.aspx
