I'm thinking that a set of cams may offer huge gains for the 3V.
Does anyone else think that it might be a fairly difficult undertaking, modifying the stock tune to work w/aftermarket camshafts? The ECU wont know that the lift an duratation has changed, but it won't recognize the MAP values that are coming back out (among other things, likely) under given situations.

I have been in discussion with the comp cams engineer for over a month on this. He has hinted to me that there new cams will be crazy as in big gains. I have been considering all month testing them and then stocking them if they are good.

Please, test them. I'd be interested in those if you found out they were worth it.
On another note I found out the yesterday that after talking to my boss about you jlt/xcal2 kit, he ordered the combo for his mustang.

The tuning files for the cams will be something completely new, especially with the throttle settings of the new Mustang's. I too have been in touch with Comp as they are only 3 hours up the road from me and they dont have anything to offer just yet they will have them soon. I used to sell ALOT of Comp. Cams for the 4.0 OHV v6 and they are above all the best quality cams of any.
I've also tuned a good number of 99-04 GT's with Comp Cams and I must say that in order to get a good idle, heck just about any idle at all you have to adjust the tuning.
Thanks, Doug.

Depending on the number of cams they release and of course your other mods I would say it may be possible. For example, say a C&L kit with headers and full exhaust and then a stage 1 or 2 cam I could see but if you have all out ported heads, larger injectors, and more bolt ons then most then I would say a dyno tune would be in your future.
Either way a canned tune may work a dynotune or atleast a wideband readout would be best.
Thanks, Doug.

"Huge gains" could very well possibly mean about 15-20 to the rear tires, 30 would be much more than what I would expect and is reaching into that "pretty far fetched" territory.
If 30rwhp can be gained, I like everybody else would be all over those cams. Couple it with some decent headwork and a properly dialed in chassis and an 11 second combo from a N/A motor is very possible.
Dont just look at Comp Cams though, Crane and a few other companies will be bringing their versions to market soon too.

BBR cams

No No No, do not trust anything by BBR, they setup false identities throughout the many forums (scam and spam) in order to sell their products. They are liars, plain and simple.
If you want some great reading material as to WHY NOT to buy into anything that BBR offers please read through this...

Hey guys,
I called my buddy at Comp today to see just how far along they truly are on the 3v stuff. They don't have anything yet and don't look for anything until after the new year.
They do have the spring and retainer configuration figured out and they have made some camshafts for the 3v's but these were the earlier style without VCT.
They did say that these new cams will work with VCT so there won't be a need to remove this feature as with most other camshafts I've seen with the 3v.
I've dyno tuned quite a few 99-04 2v 4.6 GT's with and without camshafts and with most every bolt on and a tune I make around 260-270rwhp and when a camshaft is added to the mix it does increase to 285-300rwhp, the 300 number was also with ported heads. So I'd say they offer a 2v a solid 25 rwhp +/- 5rwhp. Taking into account the better flowing heads of the 3v and I'd be willing to be into the mid 30's in gains at the wheels so 50-60 at the flywheel.
I have a well known cylinder head shop very close by that I will be working with in developement of ported heads and possibly camshafts for the 3v and I'll gladly keep everyone posted.
Thanks, Doug

Thanks for the update. A mid 30's gain would be great. Add on Port and Polished heads and a bolt on 3V should be around 370-380 to the rears.

Dont go thinking you can get 380 to the tires just yet with a simple cam swap and P&P work. The last thing any of us should do is start overadvertising with the risk of looking really stupid.
Come spring time a lot will be available, lets try to keep it cool till someone gets to a dyno that isnt biased.
By the by, Blow-By-Racing is bad, have I said that before? :P
