Supertech 5W-20? Has anyone used it in their Stang?
Wal-Mart has Supertech 5W-20 for less money than the Motorcraft 5W-20. I was planning to do 3000 mile / 6-month oil change intervals, but it'll most likely be 1500-2000 miles max every 6-months. Since all 5W-20s are at least a semi-synthetic or synthetic blend, I don't see any harm in using Supertech 5W-20. Has anyone used it or ran a UOA? Most of the folks on BITOG haven't even seen Supertech 5W-20. It carries API SM and ILSAC GF-4 certifications, FWIW. I've seen recycled engine oil sold and they are usually API SA or SB at best!
Mobil 1 was tested and found to use Group III basestocks in some of their formulations, so they are pulling a Castrol Syntec (selling a refined dino group III synthetic as "full synthetic"). Quite frankly I have not seen any significant gas mileage gains using synthetic lubricants in my vehicles. I've switched over to Mobil 1 ATF, full synthetic gear oils, full synthetic engine oils, etc... and the gas mileage remains the same. The only thing different is that my wallet gets lighter each time I change the engine oil.

It Depends
The Super Tech oil is fine under normal conditions just like any other conventional oil. I use synthetic oil to give me the added protection under harsh conditions. My engine is supercharged and I worry about the added stress and heat that it creates. If you just do daily normal driving the Walmart oil will work fine, however if you drive hard or in extreme temperatures stick with the synthetics.

I have not specifically used SuperTech, but I did do extensive oil analysis on the Motorcraft 5W-20 Factory Fill from new to 15K.
What's the benefit of using SuperTech? You're right with the "Other Brands" as I did some analysis and was shocked at the results. I was a die hard user of full synthetic and have done oil analysis for years, but my factory fill Motorcraft has done just as well in my Mustang(s).
I get coupons for a filter and oil change, $19.95 from Ford. All said and done they hit me up for $23.60 (B.S. taxes and such). I get a GT Manual loaner for an hour and take my wife to breakfast on a Saturday while they're doing it.

The service interval is supposed to be 5k miles / 6 months for "normal" duty, and 3k miles / 3 months for "severe" duty. I'm going with a 3k miles / 6 month interval.

I'd say two oil changes a year isn't wasting my money, especially if I log less than 3000 miles per oil change with the Mustang (doesn't get driven in the winter). I used to perform 12 month oil change intervals (6k miles) with the 4.6 2V, but I think that is stretching it a little even on Mobil 1 due to stop/go drive cycling.
I've heard Ford dealerships void the warranty because the engine was driven in a "severe" duty environment and the oil wasn't changed frequently when someone blew their engine. I haven't heard of any dealerships void your warranty for changing the oil too frequently. I am going to wait about 3000 miles before considering a switch to Mobil 1 5W-30 or 0W-20 in the 4.6 3V.

just seems odd because the basis of your original post was that you didnt want to spend the extra 3 bucks an oil change on motorcraft oil. and you wanted to use supertech walmart oil. however you have no problem doing them more often on a car that seems to be babied. and to go along with your owners manual, if you switch you should use mobil 1 5w-20. but again, i feel synthetic is not necessary. never had it in any engine i have owned, and the last one that i moved on from had 172000 miles on it.
in the end your driving a ford v8.. oil is oil, just keep it clean

Ford's standard service interval is 5k miles / 6 months. I wanted to do 3k mile / 6 month intervals since it will actually accrue less than 3,000 miles in 6 months.

as cheap as oil is these days compared to engines... 2-3 oil changes a year is nothing even if it's not recommended or someone says it's not necessary.
I changed the oil on my last car after letting it go for 5-6000 miles and when I drained the oil it looked like there was seperation happening, the oil looked like water/oil/sludge... it just didn't look even remotely like when I put it in.
