Steeda underdrive pulley installation help.

I purchased the Steeda underdrive pulley for my 2005 GT (Automatic).

It comes with 3 bolts and a washer shown in the pic below:

Sorry for the stupid question but the offical installation guide only mentions 2 bolts.

One of the bolts is used to pull the balancer on far enough for the factory bolt to reach. After that you're supposed to remove it and use the stock bolt.

Then it mentions something about an alternator bracket bolt.

However, it mentions nothing about this mysterious 3rd bolt that was included.

Sorry for being so dense but what is it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Official installation instructions can be downloader here: http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...stallation.gif

I don't know and this is just a guess, but maybe its a replacement for the factory bolt? Is the mystery bolt and the stock bolt the same size??

The longer bolt is used just to start the balancer on and get it on far enough for the balancer bolt to reach. Don't use the longer bolt to actually hold the balancer on, it is too long and could bottom out in the crank. The balancer bolt is a torque limit bolt. I was told by a dealer once it has been torqued, if it is loosened it will not hold torque again. Another repairman told me to put either some motor oil or anti-seize on the balancer bolt when installing the balancer. I think to help eliminate heat. If the bolt you are asking about is in the middle it is a replacement for the factory balancer bolt.

So should you use this replacement bolt or the stock bolt? I assume there are at least 3 bolts like that to secure the balancer.

Use the replacment boltand original washer. It is secured by 1 bolt. The Altenator bolt is to replace the right alternator bolt (facing engine) as the new water pump pulley would cause the belt to hit the stud. The bolt with the tag on it only for installation.

What sort of puller do you need to remove the balancer?

You need a 3-jaw puller in the 3-4" size range. I think I got a 3" 3-jaw puller for $20 from PepBoys to install mine.

Also, I just used my Dremel and a cutoff wheel to trim the extra length off the end of the alternator stud. You'll see exactly what needs to be done as soon as you put the water pump pulley on.

Installation is actually very easy (many thanks to others who have posted--made the job a piece of cake):

-Pull your intake off and flop it to the side;
-Unbolt the two reservoirs on the radiator and flop them to the side;
-Remove the two upper fan bolts and then pull the fan out (this sounded like a pain to me in other posts, but is actually very simple to do), being sure to unclip the power supply;
-loosen the four water pump pulley bolts;
-use a 1/2" ratchet to detension the belt tensioner (there is a square 1/2" area on the end that your ratchet fits into) so you can pull the belt off;
-with the car in gear and the emergency brake firmly on, unbolt the harmonic balancer bolt (I used a 2' breaker bar with my jack handle over it giving about 4' in length for leverage--came right out and I didn't even have to use my impact wrench!);
-KEEP THE STOCK BOLT IN, but loosen 5-6 turns, and mount the 3-jaw puller--the tip of the puller will push against the stock bolt--this keeps you from damaging the crankshaft threads;
-crank away on the puller and start pulling the balancer off, pause to take the puller off, loosen the stock bolt another 5-6 turns, repeat as needed;
-eventually you can't unscrew the stock bolt any further without it falling out, yet the balancer is still on--this is where I then put in the longer installation bolt to finish up the job of yanking the balancer;
-now, use some high temp/oil resistant gasket maker and smear a glob in the keyway of the new balancer and mount it;
-use the longer installation bolt and the stock washer to start snugging the balancer on;
-once you snugged it on there, remove the installation bolt, and replace it with the new final mount bolt, still using the stock washer;
-torque as instructed--I needed to use the breaker bar/jack handle extension again to get the final 3/4 turns per the instructions.
-Dremel off the alternator stud, put the belt back on and put everything back together.

It's actually a pretty quick (a little over an hour) job to do, and I really like the added pull in the upper rpms.

If you have an automatic, is there a way to keep the crank from turning when you unscrew the bolt to take off the pulley?

You have to raise the car and locate an hole in the transmission, remove the rubber plug and stick a screwdriver in to hold the converter I think.

One option other than dremel the alternator bolt off is to take the other nut off the alternator bolt, put it on the bolt you want to remove, make it a jam nut and then take the stud off. Then install the correct bolt. When I was installing it, I tried not to remove it and it squeeled and I ended up removing the pulley again and installing the bolt.

I dont think you have to dremel anything according to the instructions.

You just gotta use the supplied alternator bracket bolt.
