?? about Cam Covers
OK I'm taking my cam covers to get powder coated in the morning. My question is, how do you get the oil filler spout off? Also the rubber/plastic gromets that the elect. connecter goes thru at the front of each cover. I can't seem to get them off and I dont want to break anything. Can I leave the studs for the wires and the breather tube on or do they come off too? Thanks for your help!
The guys that powdercoated mine took care of removing or masking what was needed. But, I seem to recall we knocked those plastic plugs out with a screwdriver. Not sure now.
MAKE SURE you have them cover up the coil pack bolt holes!!! I ordered a set of the FMS chrome valve covers and I had to run a tap down each one of the holes and it wasn't fun. The tiny size made would make it nearly impossible to find anywhere after 5pm, I'm lucky enough to have an entire set of small taps on hand.
Other then that they do look great!
Thanks, Doug.

I still wish SOMEONE would do SOMETHING with those ugly covers. I agree powercoating them helps, but they need serious help.
Is removing them just a undo a bunch of bolts? I want to paint mine ford blue. I have less than 5K on the car, do I need a new gasket or just run a bead of some goey stuff.

I took mine off and had them powdercoated by Hatchman's friend Morris Powdercoating.
Oil neck - There is a small tab that locks the neck in. Carefully pry this tab up and turn counterclockwise. I broke the tab and the neck still stays in place. Knock the seals out from the backside. Place a block of wood or maybe the handle of a large screwdriver and hit the other end with a hammer or maybe a large socket and extension.
Gasket - Reuseable there will be a small dab of silicone that remains, clean this off and don't let it go into the engine. When installing place the gasket in the cover.
My advice remove battery and tray for the extra room. Not totally neccessary but makes it easier. I started with the Cam bolts but I think it would be better to remove the coils and disconnect all wire harness' then loosen the cam bolts. The cam bolts will stay in the covers. It is easier to remove them after the covers are out to avoid dropping any of them.
Clean, clean and clean again the cam covers before installing them to remove any blasting media or dirt. I used a couple of different brushes, simple green and as much air pressure as I could get from my compressor.
Install use a piece of wood something againest the seals to reinstall them. I used a large socket and rubber mallet. Snap the cambolts back in the covers. Line them up with holes and hand tighten. The bolts or holes would be very easy to crossthread. Once all are started, tighten using a criss-cross and alternating front to back pattern. Just tighten till tight. Install the coilpacks and hook up wires.
Although not neccessary I think a second set of hands to help hold the wire harness' out of the way makes it easier. I'm sure I forgot something so feel free to PM me any questions.
Try this thread it has alot of information in it.
