I think the heat shield might be the cause of some vibration/rattling. Are there any negative effects for removing it? I've heard that heat shields don't affect performance at all, but I don't want to remove it if the K&N was specifically designed for use with it and it won't work properly without it.

Thanks.

You'll be sucking in hot air from the engine compartment, which would defeat the purpose of having cold air intake

Probably not good for the engine to be breathing in hot air

tighten it and find some way to dampen other vibrations

I removed it and it didn't fix the vibration. I had to say though, it looks much cleaner without the heat shield. I don't believe the heat shield does anything, so I think I'm going to leave it off.

Yes, it does do something, it does exactly what it sounds like it does... why do you think Ford has a box around the stock filter?

some manufacturers don't use the heatshield such as MMR.

Right, that's why I figured it was just for marketing purposes...but then a few people posted that it makes a very big difference.

Lee from C&L pretty much said the same thing. Straight from the horses mouth, so to speak. He only included it, to make it appear to be a more complete kit.

If I'm not mistaken the very first ones he shipped did not have them. Same with the JLT, he added the shield later to satisfy the people who insisted on having one.

I can't see a significant amount of hot air affecting it when the car is in motion. Sitting still may be a different story, but in motion the hot air would be displaced anyway.

Keep running it without and judge for yourself if you can tell the difference or not.
