High gas cost = back to 3.55s?

Why can't we have that whole adaptive cylinder thing that Dodge has? The car uses only 4 cyl until you step on it then the other 4 kick in. But I would like one that actually made a difference. I think the Challenger has it but still get 13/19 MPG. Regarding 4.10s. I am keeping mine; I just got them installed last month. And I have to endure a 75 mile round trip. I guess I will be using the C/C alot.

+1 to this. The 3.55 is now the performance axle in the 2007-2008, while it used to be standard in the 2005-2006 model year. I believe the original 3.55 is the best overall ratio.

Our Chrysler suv has this....along with the 5.7L Hemi. Let me tell you, it' doesn't do much for it. On the hiway we can get 17mpg; however as soon as you hit moderate city driving, the mpg plummits to around 9-10 mpg. Our overall average since buying the truck in January is about 12mpg. Previously we had a Yukon XL Denali which was bigger and had the 6.0L 385HP engine with no MDS, and it averaged 16mpg- even better than the Hemi with MDS.

S/C is great. I'm still waiting for a dyno day to nail down a perfect tune, but I've been adjusting the current tune daily myself to get it dialed in better and better (I have just enough knowledge to make safe adjustments, but not enough to perfect it). Our local dyno shop has a great (and national) reputation for tuning late-model Fords, so I'm really look forward to having him work his magic. Who knows, I might get more horsepower AND better fuel economy out of the car with the right tune.

All joking aside, is there a way to get much better mileage out of these cars if we do some work on the transmission? This is what I mean:
- My 89 LX 5.0 would rev around 1600-1700 at 75-80mph. I drove from Tennessee to FL and did 330 miles with 11 gallons!
- My 07 GT is around 2400 at 75-80 with stock gears
- My 07 GT will be around 2700 after the 4.10s go in the car
- For drag racing, I will never need 5th
- Can we change 5th gear in the transmission so the engine would rev much lower?
I don't care for a lot of pickup on 5th gear, I wouldn't mind downshifting if I have to pass someone on the highway, but it would be awesome to have a 500hp mustang that can do 30+ mpg on the highway due to the right combination of gears in the back and 5th gear in the transmission itself.
I'm not versed on this, so I'm putting the questions out there, hopefully those that know about this could chime in and give us the pro-cons of going down that road...

I have notice that dodge/chrysler adaptive cylinder control, or what ever it is called does little good. Perhaps ford could make one that actually worked. I know we didn't buy a GT on the basis of fuel economy, but I know everyone here would like to have a Mustang that could get around 23/30 MPG, still have 300+hp/325+tq and run the 1/4 mile in the 13 sec range.

I would be ALL FOR THAT, as long as it was defeatable like the current TCS is.

If this works anything like the Honda variable cylinder or whatever they called it (where it runs on half the cylinders at crusing speeds) - then no thanks. We had an '05 Honda Odyssey with that technology - didnt get good mileage at all (MAYBE between 16 and 18 on the highway). Nice mini-van, but didnt get even close to the mileage we were told it would.
