High gas cost = back to 3.55s?
Anybody else considering ditching 4.10s and going back to 3.55s? My rear end is junk and it needs to be rebuilt. I'm seriously considering going back to 3.55s now. I'd gain about 5 mpg highway. that's about 80 miles per tank or 3.2 gallons per fill up. At $4 a gallon that would save me about $13 a fill up, or $0.80 a gallon. Wow that sounds like a lot when you do the math.
Basically I'd save $0.04 a mile and driving 20k miles a year that would add up to $800 a year. Not sure if 4.10s are worth 800 a year

I have the 3.73's and dropped to 14.5 city with my gear change. Just installed Summit CoP's and improved just under a 1 mpg.
Five Oh Brian, when's our weather gonna improve? Seems more like fall than spring/summer these days LOL

Depends on how much enjoyment you derive from driving. For me, I chalk up the extra cost of having a modded Mustang to my entertainment budget. Speed is my vice. I don't smoke, drug, drink, or frequent Starbucks, so all of that money goes to gasoline and spirited driving instead.

With 4.10's (before the supercharger) I was getting about 15 mpg in town, but 26-27 mpg on the highway (at 60-65 mph) or 23-24 mpg highway (70-80 mph).
I don't think switching back to factory gearing will help fuel economy dramatically. Changing one's driving style would be more effective, IMO.

I've got the 4.10's and while not romping on it as often as before - I'm still getting about 21 with city/light hwy driving. I drive about 27 miles each way to/from work - about 15 of it is highway.
I wouldn't consider changing back......no way.

I'll stay with my 4.10's even when gas hit's $10 a gallon. Then again my daily commute is 5 miles round trip.

Can also trade it in and get a Prius.
Seriously, you own a Mustang GT. And yeah, it's a performance vehicle that gets crappy mileage, but fun to drive. Your call though.

Got to agree Bill. You got to decide what your priorities are. Fun or economics. Only Dustin can really answer your original question. But on a side note. I am glad I still have my 3:31 gears in the car.

If you didn't know that I'm not a smart man when it comes to gears, you will in a second...
I don't understand why you can't have some super tall gears like the 4:10's we all love for the lower gears but than have a super duper road gear for the highway, so when I shift from 4th into 5th it's more like what a 7th gear would be. Now, am I stupid or did I just solve the entire worlds fuel economy problem?
All hail me (unless I was being stupid)

Possibly one reason the Z06 gets the same MPG we do.
