Difference between straight pipes/SLP?
essentially it is the same thing yeay however you do not need to "chop off" the factory mufflers. they are jsut bolted on right from the factory. I went with the SLP's over doing what you jsut suggested because i love the SLP tips. they are really long and shiny and are hidden well under the car and stick out as little or as far as i want them to. Because htey are so long, they are adjsutable like that. For only $220 shipped how could you go wrong. you can install them yourself in jsut under 20 minutes. no labor charges, no pipe bending charges. It may actually work out to be cheaper in the long run for you as well.
The advantage to it doing w/o the kit is you save money. Especially since the price of the SLP's has gone up. 94tbird and I, as well as many others were lucky and got them before the price increase. Now it's hard to find them for under $300. (which is rediculous for what little you're buying)
The other advantage to not buying the kit is you get to choose your own tips. The roll in the SLP Loud Mouth tips looks great, but they they are at the wrong angle. It's only about a 15* angle instead of the 45* angle the factory tips come with. (the 45* angle lines up perfectly with the body)
As you can see, I bought the kit. Here's why. I saw what a "custom" set up looked like and it was sloppy looking. I know no one will ever see it under there, but I liked the nice clean look of a manufactured set-up.
And because of how good the roll on the tips looked, they were... acceptable. (they don't look like regular rolled tips)

Find the right shop and it won't look sloppy one bit. I had straight pipes put on mine with 4" tips and absolutley love it. Best thing, only cost me $80. I know the shop owner well so he discounted me $50, but I still would have gladly paid the $130.
I just ordered the Bassani off-road x-pipe and should be installing it withing the next week or so. Depending on how loud it is, and how "tinney" it sounds through my Magnaflow axleback, I may just go to my local exhaust shop and have them put on some pipe in place of the mufflers Along with some 3.5" or 4" tips. Good to know I can get that done for under $150. No way I'm paying $300, or more, for the SLP setup.
Edit: Just thought I'd post this here... whether or not I do get the straight pipe/tips done will depend on if I can get someone to buy my Magnaflow axleback kit. I will charge whatever I can get my exhaust shop to do my pipes for, plus shipping. So, anywhere from $150-$200. My Magnaflow kit is the standard axleback kit (paid $450 for it) but I have spray painted the mufflers with some really good high-heat flat black paint. So, when installed you can't really see the mufflers from behind... just the tips. It's a great look. If anyone is interested, send me a PM. I can also take a pic from the rear showing the blacked-out mufflers.
