I had a similar problem with my SHO. Ticking at startup, then you would have to let it sit for an hour to get it to do it again. It turns out that the chain tensioners in the SHO V-8 are hydraulically actuated. It took a bit for the oil pressure to adjust them, once the oil drained back off, it would do it again. The ticking noise turned out to be the chain tapping the cover as there was slop in the chain before the tensioners pumped up. There are teeth on the tensioners that were supposed to ratchet out and lock the needed adjustment but were not.

Not sure if there is any similarities between the chain tensioners of the two engines, just thought I would throw it out there.

Well Ford had my car for the past 2 days and I just got it back. It was, as you thought, the hydraulic chain tensioner on the passenger side. It was bleeding off when the car was shut down. Looks like a seal went in it (or something). It would appear FORD is aware of the problem and a TSB may be issued since several other people have had the same problem. Fortunately the noise on my car stops after a few seconds but some have the noise as long as the car is running. The replacement part will not be in for a few weeks so I will have to bring it back to the again.

Cool! I don't think it is anything serious. I put 20K on my SHO with it like that until Bambi had to get involved......

Well I guess you were the guinee pig on this one. Looks like Ford won't screw everyone with mods. Thanks, for clearing this one all up.

John - thanks for the update and solution to the ticking noise.....I hope they get if fixed right for you and SOON!! Again, this forum is excellent as you probably just saved some of us a lot of hassle and agony over future ticking problems!!

Glad to hear that Ford is looking into issuing a TSB for the ticking issue and that it will not hurt your engine in the meantime - until you have it permanently fixed.

On another note, I stopped by my dealer today to see if they had heard of the upper strut bearing popping noise...they haven't yet - but have heard of the issue with the fuel tank......I had thought I'd read that Ford had already issued a TSB on the strut bearings?

FORD did issue a TSB on the strut bearing noise because when my car went in for the fuel tank they asked me if my car was making the bearing noise. I said no but they replaced them anyway

Got my car back but it goes back in on Monday when they have more time to work on it. They spent most of the day installing the camber plates and fixing the alignment but they are trying a host of things to fix the noise. First, they are going to install the 2 missing bolts on the flywheel cover, but only 1 tech thinks that is the issue. Once they put those in they will check the exchaust and go from there. I just hope it doesn't require pulling the motor apart.

how about the warranty? is it void due to the mods?

Regardless if there is a TSB on something, if you have a problem they should fix it.

They don't care because they want to do the work on it and get paid.

I agree - if by the end of the month no tsb I am going to insist its fixed with part 5R3Z18138A - this supposedly the part id to fix the popping noise.

If they are not aware of the TSB just print out the one that is posted here and take it to them. That is what I did for my dealer then all he had to do was look it up on the computer. Some dealers don't keep up with the TSB's. Even if you just take him the TSB number he should be able to look it up. No argument or judgement call then.
