On a scale from 1 - 10, how loud are the SLP LM's, PowerFlos, Borla Stingers, Corsas and the Bassani's that everyone raves about?

Also, I notice a lot of manufacturers make a lot of axlebacks that essentially look the same. ie) the Stingers, Powerflos etc. (they have that circular muffler type thing) Do they all sound the same? I am asking because some are more expensive than the others.

Right now I am sort of stuck on what to get. I want to keep the muffler but I want something noticeable. I either want to go with the SLP PowerFlo, Borla Stinger, Corsa or the Bassani SS Street Race axleback.

Don't even bother with SLP's, the exhaust hanger welds break. It happened to my Powerflo's after just 4 months. They also have a horrible drone inside the car for a while until they break in. I was not happy with how loud they were inside the car.

Every axleback is going to increase the volume slightly, as well as tweak the tone and and the overall noise...Just don't expect a huge difference from stock. Yes its definitely noticable, but its not as big of a difference as if you throw on an o/r pipe etc.

If I was to rate the volume of my exhaust it would go something like this...This is VOLUME only, not taking into account my opinion on tone/overall sound/etc

1= Stock
3.5= Borla Stingers
4.5= No mufflers
7= Bassani Catted X and Borla Stingers
8= Bassani Catted X and No mufflers
10++= Open manifolds

Does anyone have a rating system for mufflers with stock H-pipes and stock cats? I realized that a lot of people with off-road h/x pipes are going to get very different results than those with stock exhaust components.

What axle-backs should I get for the deepest most muscle-car like sound with all factory components?

FWIW- I took a dB meter with my exhaust (SLP LM's and stock everything else) and the results were 115 dB.
From personal experiences, out of the mufflers you listed I'd go with the Stingers. I prefer them, but its a very subjective thing. They have a great tone and aren't insanely loud unless you get on it. A lot of my friends have them and absolutely love them.

I heard unless you're running a turbo kit, shorty headers are a waste if you're doing a n/a or blower application. Is this true?

I was listening to the early sound clips in this thread and I think the hookers sound more like the early rods than all the rest

Generally speaking for HP and TQ gains shorty headers on a N/A stang, pretty much minimal gains. Some N/A people still get them just for exhaust note.

Does anyone have an impression of the JBA 40-2627 axlebacks. I found a couple clips on youtube and they sound good.

I'm looking at:

Stingers
JBA
GTAs
and maybe Bassani SS non-race.

Don't like the price of the Bassani but I want something that sounds like this car should but I like the "gurgly" idle a smooth wind up and a mean loud WOT. Also like the noticeable note during decel engine braking.

If you aren't in a big hurry, just keep an eye out for some used Bassani's on the net. Check around some other boards for sale sections and ebay. I have the Bassani street versions and wouldn't trade them for the world.

A lot of the videos I've found of Bassanni don't tell if they are race or SS/BX.

I just found these of the JBAs and they sound great.

I just had the JBA's installed. My car has an otherwise stock system. The JBA's are louder than stock at idle with a deeper tone. Very good sound. When you get on it they sound reaaal niiiice! I've only had them on for a couple of days and so far the only negative thing I can say is that they had more drone (1200-1500 rpm) than both the stock muffler and the Magnaflows I recently removed, but it's not enough to bother me. These are not the loudest, but that's what I was looking for....a little louder with a nice deep muscle tone.
