How old are your tires?

 

Yep...great info Bill.

Many racers have known for a long time that tires dry out quick. Although there's not so much of a tread seperation problem, it's the "Stickum" in the tire that goes away long before it's worn out. A common rule of thumb among those in the know back when I was hot and heavy was "No more than 4 heat cycles".

Every heat cycle brings the stickum to the surface so the tire will stick to the track. After a certain amount of heat cycles (depending on the tire) the tires would slow considerably.
The tires we used dropped a half second per lap at 5 heat cycles)


First set of practice laps, slow and easy to warm the tire but not 100% up to temp. (scuff laps)

Heat Cycle 1=Qualifying-2 laps. (Fast as this tire's ever going to be)

Heat Cycle 2=Trophy dash-4 laps

Heat Cycle 4=Heat race-Last weeks main event tires for heat cycle 4.

Heat Cycle 3=Main event-Save these tires for next weeks Heat race.

Heat cycle 5=practise set, then sell still brand new looking tires to teams who don't understand heat cycles and think you're stupid for selling a new tire for half price.

Bonus=Use winnings to buy more new tires and sell old crappy tires to those willing to buy them and wonder why you're continually beating them....

Most guys never figured out that the new tires cost me exactly the same as the old tires because when I sold them, they bought them at half price. The difference was, I got the good half.

So bringing this back to the video....YES tires get dry and deteriorate and can eventually fail....the codes on the side mean something and thats part of what a tire specialist on a racing team gets paid for...scouting out the best "Sets".
