Just got back from seeing Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Gotta say...I was disappointed. Not a single Mustang in the whole movie.

Actually, it was really very good. It helped seeing Rise of the Planet of the Apes a few weeks ago. No doubt there'll be a sequel.

There was a little hint, a homage as it were, to the last scene in The Godfather. I love it when that kinda stuff happens in movies.

There are quite a few different reasons and benefits to the lights;

Aside from the bright colors, you can play around with the typical white spectrum, so, If you want the more yellow relaxing lights of typical incandescents, you can go with that, or a more clean LED look, you can get that too. The Colors are more of just a do it because you can thing, but you would be surprised how using different colors can change your environment, even if you use them for accenting.

You can also control each individual bulb and set them at different brightnesses, and create your own default scenes, so you can have a button you hit for "TV mode" so it puts on the exact setup you like for watching TV, etc. You can also control all your lights from your phone anywhere, which is a plus, in addition to being able to setup geofencing so your lights come on when you get home, and turn off when you leave. You can have your lights setup on a timed schedule where different things happen at certain times, or even have your lights come on when your alarm goes off.

It's all open source, so there are really no limits, and tons of apps available. In addition, it integrates with IFTTT(If This Then That), which can create some really cool setups. (This lightbulb will blink when your phone is ringing/you get a text; when this particular person calls/texts/emails me then the lights will flash; The lights will flash in this particular color when my team scores through my ESPN app; in the morning the lighting will correspond to the type of weather(blue for rain, red for hot, etc); when my Nest thermostat detects I'm home(for the auto away setting), it will turn on the lights in the house; when the sun sets lights will come on; simulate a sunrise using multi colors when the sun is actually rising; etc.

When it comes to IFTTT, the possibilities are endless, especially considering the amount of channels is growing.

Some people are even using the lighting system with great success with their small children. Lighting and colors will indicate particular items on their schedule(bath time, brush your teeth, bed time, etc.

It's really just something to tinker around with, and is cool as ****. Most people don't often think about their lights that much, but you'd be surprised what a difference it makes.

Some of the power on/power off lighting situations I'd be inclined to use. But I don't think I'd ever change the color or set them to flash. Hell, I'd forget why they were flashing. Probably like most gadgets I own, I'd play with it for 20 minutes, then set it and forget it.

They have white bulbs too(Phillips Lux), but they are way too pricey right now. Although it is nice, because they work on the same system, so you can retrofit and mix/match bulbs. In fact, the Hue System itself is still too pricey for what it is. I personally think the sweet spot would be around $40-45 per Hue bulb, with a better price for the more bulbs you buy, and $30 or so for the Lux bulb.

I enjoy the color aspect as you can get some really interesting dynamic color situations in a room, and really change the mood and feel of the room and tailor it to what you are doing/what you are watching.

Plus, with all the available apps, you can just let the lights work themselves and you don't really have to do much input, aside from the initial setup.
