I don't use the Metro interface.

I have been making a living in IT for close to 30 years and have learned to challenge, then accept, embrace and make new technology my biatch.
I remember the uproar when Windows threatened DOS, and NT through its various incarnations and the 9X/ME/XP mess and all the rest.
Change is tough for some people, I guess, but it really is for the best.
Forget the forgettable interface on top (Metro is only good for touchscreens after all) and get to the kernel and you will find a rock-solid environment for development, productivity apps and recreation.

Those who prefer the old GUI can get it back easily, the desktop is familiar and there are 3rd party tools to get you a start button and all the other system-clogging crap you miss.

I know haters gonna hate and all that, but if you don't even TRY to learn a little more about it and how to use it, it's a little like a virgin saying sex is not all that great.

 

It's like your saying "yeah the tiles suck but you can always go back to windows 7 mode", so why upgrade in the first place? What does one stand to gain besides tiles and losing a bit of functionality 7 already has?

 

8 is faster, uses less system resources, and has more features.

 

Everyone needs to get over the tiles thing. It's not about the tiles. Metro is a TINY part of the OS for me.
You can think of Metro as a full-screen start menu with giant live icons, essentially. I don't need it and I didn't use (or need) the Start Menu that much before anyway.

What's better with 8?
Just off the top of my head:
Vastly improved Task Manager and file management functionality,
much better startup/shutdown/reboot times, support for USB 3 and >3TB volumes,
easier and more intuitive search and most importantly for me - overall resource utilization and better security.
But that is because I do this for a living and need to do a lot more than check email, blog and play games.

As I indicated several times, I can literally do much more with the same resources I already had and that is pretty important in my position.
I am VP of Tech Services and I need to be on top of the changing IT situation as well as be able to actually USE new tech.
It's all about the skillset and ability (or willingness) to evolve.

I am not trying to change anyone's religion - people decide to believe in what makes them happy. That's why they make chocolate AND vanilla.

All that being said - unless they have a tablet or touchscreen PC, most people should probably stick with Windows 7 for now (or XP if they are Fred Flintstone!)
Just like most people should probably drive a Camry or Prius instead of a bad-*** Pony Car.

 

I know cross network data transfer rates are alot better when going from a win 8 to winsrv2012 machine

 

I know, GigaBit is nice when it really delivers.
Remember 10base2 or even 10base5?

I can attest that working from home leads to very little growth oppurtunities. It's why I found a new job back a few years ago

 

Frustrated... setup a Ubuntu 12.04 lamp server with apache2 webadmin and phpmyadmin. Used to get the "it works!" Page. So I tried changing index.HTML with a index.HTML I made and I now get an error 403 forbidden. Any gurus wanna help a noob out? Also filezilla is being a ***** because Ubuntu permissions...

Minecraft? I figured your permissions were all messed up, but it's been too long since I've used Linux to really be of any help.

 

Nah. Shut down that minecraft server. Still got it but not online. Running a web server now. Hold my files and i can access them anywhere. Also running a few websites on it.

While i agree, it's still a very useful product.

 

Just curious, can you provide details? I'm seriously just trying to see where it would be beneficial over a standard 2012 version.

 

I'm not saying that it can do anything that 2012 can't, as Windows Server 2012 Essentials is more or less the replacement for WHS 2011. But for $50 it's a very fully featured version of Server 2008 R2.

I mostly use it for file storage/personal cloud and backups. It provides a really simple interface for users/permissions/drives/RDP/remote access website/etc. and requires very little maintenance.

I do have free access to 2012, but I haven't had time to install or mess with it. Do you think it's worth it?

Edit: After looking at some screenshots of 2012 Essentials just now, it looks very similar to WHS with a Windows 8 theme...but WHS is $320 cheaper.

 

ubuntu server is free . and it can do pretty much anything! just gotta figure out how lol. building websites right now.

 

So I was deleting files off my WinXP laptop, and I go into the network places>sharedfiles and delete some stuff, and I came upon this audio file, which I've never seen before, so I click on its properties. It was created 2/17/13 .... And last modified 10/01/12.... Thing is I had just moved files around in that folder, in early feb, and that audio file was not there. So I start asking people that may have used my laptop if they knew where that file might have come from, my brother-in-law said he downloaded it sometime last year, but the interesting thing is he did not download it onto my laptop but on to a desktop that I had at that time ( my laptop was out of service for most of last year ).
Weird O.o I have no idea how that file got there.
Any thoughts?

 

Possibly in a folder that automatically syncs files.
