Hi all... I'm one of the patiently waiting crowd... since Dec '04. Was just told last Thursday that my '05 is on the way... should arrive by the end of the month. I was going to take in my '00 this Tuesday to get trade-in value and some of the paperwork prepared.

Last evening though my '00 had a nice long key along the driver's side... makes me sick. There's a small possibility I may know who did it but I was hoping to get some advice on what, if anything could be done legally? Would the police even bother taking a report on something like this since it's pretty much impossible to trace... unless I find out who? I hate to turn it in on insurance but it covers the front fender, door and rear panel... bet it's going to be expensive to repaint.

Any advice or experience would be appreciated. I'm trying to keep calm but it's such a childish, cowardly act. I'm already afraid for the new one.

Thanks!
Jason

Jason, sorry to hear about the misfortune on your '00 Mustang. If you think you may know the culprit, and fearful for your '05 when it gets here, then it sounds like you may have a known enemy? Keying someone's car is a cowardly act as you described.

The police probably can't do anything except question the person you suspect, in the absense of witnesses there's not much they can do. Still, if the person is likely to cave to being questioned by police then it might be worth a try. I'd go ahead and start an insurance claim and ask the agent if you need to file a police report for insurance reasons. Sorry to hear that happened, that just plain bites!

You'll waste your time involving the police without proof. If you think you know who did it, try to verify or evaluate hints. Then find a way to exploit his/hers weaknesses, wait a reasonable period of time, and get even, just don't publicize it.

Well one thing I would do is setup a video camera on your '05 when you get it.

Any idea why someone would key your car? Were you taking up more than one parking spot or something?

Thanks for the responses guys.... makes me feel like I'm not alone. I figured without any hard evidence the police wouldn't bother. I actually met (for the first time) and talked with the person I thought "may" have done it. Ex-husband to a new relationship I have... seems like a nice enough guy... he still gets along with his ex. Doesn't seem like the type to do this but that's about the only 'possible' enemy I could think of.

I was also at a crowded movie theater late last night and it more than likely happened then. I just might not have noticed in the dark. I parked well within my lines on an end spot away from other cars... go figure. Probably some jealous little punks attempting to prove their manhood or something.

I'm going to give the insurance company a call and see what happens. Thanks again for your responses... I appreciate it!

Jason

Ooo boy... insurance providers looove these sort of claims. A great way to jack up your rates, man.

Just a suggestion, I'd eat it if I were you.
