DEARBORN — Ford Motor Co. will phase out the Excursion, replacing it in model-year 2007 with a long-wheelbase version of its full-size Expedition sport-utility vehicle, according to supplier sources. A long-wheelbase edition of the Lincoln Navigator could follow a year later.

Ford engineers have been photographed testing prototypes of the new model, which is known internally as Expedition Max. Although the test vehicles are generally heavily disguised, photos reveal some details of the new front end that will be shared with the redesigned 2007 Expedition.

The so-called Expedition Max goes into production next summer, about six months after the redesigned 2007 Chevrolet Suburban, its chief competitor, is launched. The '07 Expedition Max will go on sale next fall, about the same time as the standard '07 Expedition and the redesigned '07 Lincoln Navigator.

The Max will be about 16 inches longer than the regular Expedition, suppliers said. It will have three rows of seats.

Meanwhile, the Excursion is expected to be phased out of production this fall, at the end of the 2005 model year.

Suppliers say Ford is planning to add a long-wheelbase variant of the Navigator in fall 2007, as a 2008 model. It will share front-end sheet metal with the standard Navigator and will be built on the same underpinnings as the Expedition Max.

This is a great move in my opinion. And from the looks it will be a beautiful edition to the already great lineup

The Navigator is the same length as the Expedition, isn't it?

Then....wouldn't it be a LONGER Expedition rather than a Navigator with an F150 nose?

I already think the current Expedition is one of the best looking SUV's out there, I hope they don't screw this up.

I filled up my V6 Mustang for $26.00 tonight - and it wasn't on E. Wonder what the price of gas will do to sales of these vehicles.
