New 90-degree V-10 with 507 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque (European measure)
Redline: 8250 rpm
One hundred horsepower per liter of displacement
Double-VANOS variable valve timing
Electronically controlled throttle butterfly for each cylinder
MS S65 engine management system features most powerful processors currently approved for use in automobiles
Seven-speed SMG transmission with steering wheel shift controls
Twenty percent faster shifts compared with last-generation SMG
Drivelogic with eleven program options that enable shift characteristics to be tailored to suit the driving situation and the mood—six of these programs can be selected in the sequential manual gearbox mode (S mode)
A 500 hp, 8250rpm V10! 7 speed SMG! Whew! Granted it costs a small fortune and still looks pretty weird, the specs are quite impressive and BMW usually delivers on the performance.
Now if Ford could only come up with at least a 400hp 5.0 mod motor with 6 speeds, I'd be purty pleased.

that motor is a masterpiece.. problem is what happens when some of those electronic goodies fail? I know that there is a lot of torture testing but repairs to the motor will be very expensive

haha that engine doens't have room to fart if it wanted to ![Smile](https://themustangsource.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Very cool though.
But kinda weird...seeing an engine with over 500hp and under 400ftlbs of torque

and they always accelerate better than their HP would suggest. and the engines are so super smooth its crazy. and most people who buy BMW's trade them in before 50,ooo miles b/c they get free everything from the dealer upto 50k when you buy one. most people who keep them over 50k buy their extended warranty to cover them to 100k. and for tourque all those exotic V10, V12's are always low on torque. i guess its b/c you have to rev the snot out of the little motors to get power there is no torque down low

All that a 4 doors too.
BMW motors have high HP but lower torque numbers. I'd love to know why.

And BMW seems to be quite conservative in their engine output and car performance numbers with real world results usually surpassing the factory specs.
Then multiply this by the stupendous 8250 redline and voila - 500hp - awesome number for a n.a. 5.0 and approaching Fords new supercharged 5.4 GT motor.
As for the electronics under it, any car nowadays has so much electronic and computer controls, engines included, that I wouldn't expect the M5s to be much different than any other car in this regard, good or bad.
Interestingly, this motor sounds very similar in configuration (V10), size (5.0) and output to Lambo's Gallardo motor.
Anyways, always interesting to keep a check on what other folks are doing in their engine bays.
Now about that Bungled, errr, Bangle (over)styling...

I love the bangle styling. The low torque number is probably due to the v10 design with a relatively small 5.0 displacement. Remember the viper only makes it's awesome torque because of it's bloated size.

Nice motor, to be honest I think BMW builds the best motors in the world bar none.
Hmmm.... If I were to make a list, it would be
European - BMW (no contest here BMW never fails to impress me)
American - GM (dont get me wrong I'm a ford guy, though and through, but the LS1 is a pretty darn good engine.)
Asian - Hmmm... this ones a tough one... nissan (although my gut feeling is toyota)

The reason that they are getting so much power out of it is because the engine is set up to rev up to a very high rpm. After all it redlines at 8250 rpms. The motor is pretty much stressed to the limit. If you want similar from Ford, look at the new 5.0L Crammer. It's a similar story there. It gains its peak power at very high rpm as well.
