im in a 25% bracket now lets hope that doesn't change; also selling property and 15% capital gains is nice... these are good for the middle class

maybe they can give them a tax break if possible but i dont think handouts are the answer

Granted there might be a few that would but the majority will not. That is wasteful spending. If you want students to do community service then make it for a course credit.
Federally issued tuition money isn't the same as a Tax Rebate check, it can't be spent on anything but tuition and books, anyone who's ever applied for federal financial aide could tell you that. As someone who was recently in college I can testify that $4k for 120 hours of comm. service would have been a blessing, as it took me several months working a night job around my class schedule to cook up that same amount.

LBS, A national sales tax is regressive and an economic disaster waiting to happen.

It was reported as a Tax rebate check....not federally issued with strings attached. I am a college grad and I worked my butt off as well but as I stated the fact remains that the majority of students would not use the money for the intended purpose. If he wants to help out then give a tax break to the parents who as a majority struggle to pay college tuition....if they are not then allow a way to let the student apply but to blindly promise this sort of program when there is no way to pay for it just shows that he intends to take it from somewhere else and that is usually our pockets in the form of more taxes.

Thousands of students in the past including myself made it through without this sort of govt. assistance and you can too....hard work never hurt anyone and today we have a serious lack of work ethic for the most part....I can attest to that as well since it is about impossible to get good help because nobody wants to work...they just want a paycheck and free ride. There are some exceptions to this but for the most part this is a sad fact.

Fact: government aid is the best way to increase inflation. Money is not real as long as it moves from the left pocket to the right. Obama and/or McCain should think about how to help the Big 3 boost their sales outside the US. Who cares if a car is $1,000 cheaper due of govt aid, when the buyers don't have the purchasing power?

Here's something to think about:

Chrysler sells the 300C SRT starting at around $45,000 in the US. The same car costs $150,000 in Europe, of which $65,000 are various taxes collected by the EU, leaving Chrysler with around $40,000 over the US price. Now, where do you think Chrysler (or any other US car manufacturer) should start boosting their sales? But I guess it's better to play it safe and keep trying to sell pick-up trucks and mediocre, gas-guzzling sedans on an over-saturated market of less-than-wealthy buyers with many other financial concerns on their minds at the moment...
