Ford thinks that they will return to profitability in NA in 2009. According to the pundits, Fords turnaround is 2-3 years behind GMs. Could Ford beat GM to the black ink in NA?

Sure.
Ford's share of the domestic market dropped from 18.2% in 2000 to 13.5% last year (during the beginning of the 'turnaround'). Ford stock fell to US$6, a level not seen in 22 years, in January.
Despite gains in select markets like CUV sales, and a 44.4% increase in Focus sales to 11,600, Ford Motor Company sales overall fell another 4.1% in January.
How do they expect do reach profitability within 12 to 18 months when their overall numbers keep sinking deeper into the red?
It's more likely to be 2010 or 2011 at the earliest.

I guess we'll need to reconvene around this time in '09 to see how '08 panned out for them.
