Scan Tools

Hey folks,

I want to buy a scan device that helps me read and clear DTC, as well as, tell me when I am emission's ready. I currently have a CAI/tune; but will revert back to stock for the emissions test..then back again to CAI/Tune. I want to take the guessing out of the vehicle emission test (i.e., find out that I am not "emission ready" at the inspection station) . I know I could rent a scan tool from autozone, but would not mind having one of my own.

Who uses what? I have heard about the Innova 3100, but with mixed reviews/

Thanks.

Depending on who you got your tune from will be the biggest factor. If you did not ask for an "emmissions legal" tune then you will have to revert back to stock and drive it around for about 50 miles or so to reset the PCM. Also, what tuner do you use to input the tune? I had an SCT II tuner that also could read and clear engine codes. If your tuner can do that, then u won't need any extra equipment to read and clear codes.

I got a tune from Brenspeed and it's not an emission legal tune. Switching back to stock for the test is easy for me. I uploaded the tune using the SCT X3 and, yes, it can clear codes, but it will not tell me if I am emissions ready. I know about the drive cycle, but again, I want to know I am ready before I hit the inspection site. Sort of what the OP talks about on this post:

I just bought the basic OBD II scannner from O'Reillys that way I can use it on any car. Has a green, yellow and red lights for emission readiness. I use Diablo for my tunes.

We picked up an ODB-II reader that was Can bus capable from Harbor Freight tools. We got the one that can view the snapshots (what was happening when the code happened) and it displays the code in English and by number. We paid about $80 for it. They have cheaper versions but I this one seemed to have the info I wanted (including emission readiness and we have also been burned on that).

I have the Innova 3100, works very good. Bought from Amazon for around $80. You can read codes and clear cel light. I think for the really good ones you are talking a lot more money than this one.
