To conclude all of this cop talk- I am almost twenty two years old. I have owned Mustangs since I was seventeen, and NEVER have had any moving violation, no accidents or tickets. Last month, the CompUSA I worked at closed, and I got laid off and am now on unemployment. Last Thursday, I was pulled over by a town cop for going 11MPH over the speed limit. I was actually on my way to an orientation session for RI unemployment, in my truck. I explained that to the officer, I was extremely polite, while he acted like I was going double the speed limit...he wouldn't even listen to me. Needless to say, I got my first ticket and he had no sympathy for me and just put the clipboard in my face. Keep in mind, my driving record was perfect prior to this incident...one hundred dollars for 36 in a 25? BS...they need to find something better to do with their time. Conversely, the state troopers in our state are highly regarded, and don't pull over people unless they are in excess of 15 mph of the limit, which is reasonable.

My respect for town and city law enforcement = nil

My last (hopefully) reply about this stuff. While I personally dont cite someone unless they are going 15 over, there are/have been times I have stopped for 10 or so , depending on the situation.

Realize that it isnt US who sets the base fines, so dont blame us. I get asked alot, "How much is this going to cost me". I hate having to tell them some of the fines, but once again, I dont set them.

last but not least, let me ask you what you do for a living?? Remember this is OUR career and we have to do our job. Do you half a$$ your job? No??, so dont ask me to do that for mine.

Lets say you work for a trailer mfg. If you truly are doing the best you can do, are you going to launch 10-15 nails through the floor board without hitting a single support beam? Are you going to allow some kid to come into your store your working at and take candy or items that arent expensive? Are you going to throw 2 lug bolts onto my wheels instead of 5 and say, that should be enough???

You can dis-like me all you want, I dont care, but if you dont want me to do my job, then dont commit crimes or violate laws. simple as that. Am I perfect, hell no. For instance. If I am coming to work and I catch myself going to fast, I tell myself I wont stop anyone for the same speed I was doing. (I normally dont go faster than what I would accept though).

But dont sit there and say, "I was going to fast, I got a ticket, so now I have no respect for cops". That's ignorant.

P.S, I dont have a radar detector, but when I was younger I believe I had a cobra and a uniden.

Not to hijack the thread, but anyone going over 10 mph over the speed limit probably deserved what they got....My problem is the stupid freakin tint laws. My wife got pulled over in her Nissan Murano for her tint and although she got of with a verbal warning, I would not have been so lucky. I have a hard time believing that an officer doesn't have anything better to do, with all the people selling crack to kids and serial rapist on the prowl that they could waste their time and mine to pull me over and check how dark my tint is. That is my rant..I use the cheap cobra radar detector from Best Buy.

Colby,

It's not a question of liking you or disliking you. For me, it's simply about basic fairness. Here is a couple of examples:

1) After they installed red light cameras in my neck of the woods, police officers (both in private vehicles and in their patrol cars) received FAR more tickets than the average citizen. Why? Because the police officers here where FAR more likely to run a red light (and especially red turning arrow) than the normal citizen because they KNEW they would not get pulled over for it. The tickets for the cameras are written by a company in another state, so the fact that they are on of the "boys in blue" didn't keep them out of THESE tickets! And I have seen this same behavior in pretty much ever town I've ever been in.

2) My daily commute used to take me down a road that had a 45 mph speed limit, but traffic normally ran around 55 to 60. In the morning, I would often see a specific police car patrolling this road doing 40 mph with his radar on and creating a huge traffic jam. But I would see that EXACT SAME COP that evening on that EXACT SAME ROAD driving 60 to 65 mph with the radar off heading home for the day. And yes, I have followed him home just to see where he was going in such a hurry. I've seen SEVERAL police officers exhibit this exact same pattern on many occasions.

This is the sort of hypocrisy that gives all police officers a bad name. And, I feel that most of this behavior is driven by the politicos ability to generate money by setting speed limits artificially low and then fining people when they drive the "natural" speed limit.

Example: One other "issue" that was brought up during the 55 mph speed limit debates was obviously speeding. Some people claimed that if they raised the limit from 55 to 75, then people that used to be driving 70 to 75 would then go 90 to 95 mph (the same 15 to 20 mph over the limit).

Did this happen?

Not really. At least not around here.

I just got back from a road trip to Lubbock. Part of that trip had me on I-25 for about 120 miles. I had my cruise set at 80 (yup, 5 mph over on a rural interstate!) and would slowly overtake and pass folks as the vast majority was actually doing less than 5 mph over the limit! During that entire 1 1/2 stint, I was only passed by a small handful of people as well. Strange as it is to contemplate, but MOST people were doing very near 75 mph!

Interesting how when the speed limit was 55 mph, a majority of people were doing 70-75 mph. Since they raised it to 75, a majority of people are doing 70-75 mph! If you set the speed limit to the "natural" speed limit, people tend to follow it because they are COMFORTABLE driving that speed.

But anyway, I do understand that police officers have nothing to do with setting speed limits.

As for on topic, I have and love my Valentine 1. Between the signal count and a true front/rear sensing (via two completely separate radar receivers, one pointing forward and one point rearward), you just get SO much more information from a V1 that you flat CAN NOT get from any other detector. It's about eight years old now, so it really does need to be upgraded to the current version.

At least I know I am not the only one with that opinion...and few people can disagree with my outlook if you read my entire post. I am not being ridiculous...

sometimes I don't think even the best radar/laser detector can protect you against those dreaded instant-on devices....those radar/laser instant-on guns are too quick to clock you!

What makes me laugh since I've been a member on this site is the cops who always preach. please don't try to BS us that you never unlawfully speed. You have GT Mustangs w/ CAI's and race tunes for god sakes. Anyone w'/ a modified Mustang who tries to say that they don't speed(and I'm not talking on the track)is flat out lying IMO. Why would you bother modifying it and never see what it can do? I don't hate cops, but I do hate hypocrites

RRRoamer,

Great post. I can understand your frustration from that. With all your observations, what you should have done is just called his dept and filed a complaint.

I dont excuse what that officer did, and he obviously is setting a poor example. The ones running the red light are also setting a bad example. That stuff doesnt fly here. Are there times I have to run red lights and stop signs, hell ya, but my lights and sirens are also on, and I defintely dont just fly through them.

Im a cop and im human. I make mistakes and I know others do also. I dont cite everyone I stop and ive let ALOT of people go for making mistakes. They are human also and that doesnt mean they deserve a citation everytime. If I truly feel that they noticed they made a mistake, then they are already complying with what needs to be done. If I see they have 5 other cites for the same thing, then they arent learning.

I do appreciate your post though. Id be ticked off if I was you also. Next time, get the car # and file a complaint.

Boltz...If your referring to me, I really am not preaching, im explaining. I do have a modified mustang and yup I have doubled the speed limit more than once, but I dont do it in the city limits, nor do I do it on a busy highway or around houses, people, etc. country back roads are the best. Again, as I have posted, im not perfect.

okay I posted one more than I said I would. lol

Colby,

Between the mayor and the chief of police, I don't have a whole lot of faith in filing a complaint. I might be wrong, but I suspect there is a greater chance of it causing more problems (for me) than solving them.

And FYI, I almost never us a radar detector in town (or even short trips for that matter). I just don't speed that much in town, generally I'm just going with the flow of traffic. About the only time I do use my radar detector in town is to see if some cop who is doing 5 under the limit has his radar on (usually).

I've also known a few really great police officers in my life. Generally state police I have to admit... A couple of them have even lost their lives in the line of duty. One was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop by an illegal alien just a few months before retirement.

Man that is off topic! Ok. No more posts like this from me! I promise!!!

This was not really directed at you in particular and I understand that you were not preaching. These discussions always get off topic and it doesn't need to be that way. I'll get back to topic and say that a radar detector will be my last mod if I don't have anything else to buy(Supercharger would be nice but the buget won't allow it)

because it seems they aren't really worth it to me if theres a good chance I could still get a ticket.

I've got it and love it.

Others say that it has less range and batteries don't last long. But, I really only use it when going on drives 30 minutes or longer, and I don't use it as a method to go 50 in a 25. For me, it's used more as an indicator of if there's radar being used, as a precautionary measure.

I've never noticed a decrease in range. But again, I'm not using it as a means to drive fast, so 1/8 mi range vs. 1 mile range makes no difference. But, there have been times that it's gotten radar before I've even seen the officer or the "your speed" sign. Also, I use rechargeable batteries, so battery life doesn't matter either.

For me, the cordless is very nice, because I can transfer it to different cars very easily. And, since they're illegal in VA, I'm able to take it off my dash easily once I cross the border.

This is what you need to do. If your gonna go radar and you want to keep the cops of your back and never know you have a radar detector.

1) Get either the STI R or the new Escort Hidden PASSPORT 9500 ci
http://www.escortradar.com/9500ci.htm
It includes laser jammers as well.

2) Get the Speedcheatah Radar Remote or the GPS mirror.
(this will automatically turn off the Radar/Jammer units 2-3 seconds after detection)

3) Lower your car. This way when you hit the brakes, the dips will be less noticable.

4) Wire the speedcheatah to your brake lights, so they turn off when the Radar detectors/jammers go off. Now Smokey Bear has no way of knowing your tapping your brakes.

5) Learn how to properly use your Radar detector and the different types of warnings and how different types of Police radar set off your unit. (eg POP, instant ON, etc..) A radar detector is USELESS, if you don't do your homework on this.

6) Always, always...look around and be aware of your surroundings. If your coming up to a place where you think a copper may be waiting. Then he probably is.
(this includes, crests of hills, under passes, sharp turns.) So keeps your eyes open and slow down in these areas. Always better safe then sorry.

7) Optionaly...mount an infrared camara (hot white). For night speeding. You will see your enemy from miles away in complete darkness because there car will be hotter then the environment.

SO there you have it complete stealth.

PS.
To the nay sayers about this these tactics. I really don't care about your safetly concerns and how legal or illegal this is. So don't bother telling me, i heard it a million times.
And Honestly...people who drive faster are safer drivers. And they are more alert and less likely to just look out their front window without looking in their mirrors. The real sinners are those you are too scared to speed and who don't follow the German Autobahn code of conduct. Meaning get out of the way and stop hogging the lane when there is nobody in front of you for miles.

Bottom line. If you want avoid a ticket, you need to be smart and be 2 steps ahead in the tech department.

Valentine 1 here. I like it. It works. It tells me where and how many, just like the ads say.

It is pricey though. I think it was ~$400 as an X-mas gift from my wife.

It's not going to save me if I do something stupid, but it is enough to give me a good safety blanket.

And as noted above, I'm lowered with FR3 so I don't dip too much, but I usually just let off the gas and coast rather than hit the brakes.

and Cannonballer

You take speeding to a new level!
