Ready to Order - MSRP vs. Invoice?

So I finally went to Galpin Ford in L.A. here to order a '07 GT premium - loaded, 5 speed. I've waited 2 years to do this and have been a lurker on this board the whole time. So I want to know - is Invoice plus 2% a good price? The sales manager would not budge from this. Just a month ago at a smaller dealer in L.A. I was offered family plan (below msrp) on a loaded '06 GT (around $28,500). I decided to wait for an '07 so I can order spoiler delete, premium interior, etc. Next question is - what is the difference between msrp and invoice? I went to Galpin Ford today with the printout of exactly what I wanted from the Ford website configurator. The final price was like $31,000 and that was the MSRP. They said they would do 2% above this. This is not the invoice though, is it??
I know now the salesman will start calling me and I don't know what I should hold out for. Don't want to lose the car for $600 but I want to get the best price. Obviously they are trying to get higher dollar for the 07's but Galpin is the biggest Ford dealer in the world. What should I do. Any advice would be appreciated.

Go here and request a x-plan PIN: http://www.blueovalforums.com/forums...p?showforum=45

This will get you about $50 below invoice without any haggling, but the dealership does not have to sell you a car at x-plan so you may have to shop around. I never had a problem finding a dealership willing to order me a car on x-plan.

To see the difference between invoice and MSRP you can build you car at http://www.kbb.com

If X-plan doesn't work out for you, 2% over invoice is a good deal for you and a fair deal for the dealer.

Go to Edmunds.com and price the car out there with the options you're wanting, and get their invoice price. They typically miss a couple minor charges that the dealer is invoiced for, but for the most part they're dead on right.

I'll warn you now: There's not a lot of markup in these cars. So don't expect to save 6-7 grand off of MSRP, even at X-plan.

Yeah but he was getting 2% above MSRP NOT invoice.

I don't know what options you got on your car... if it's a vert then I can see it being that high, but for a coupe 31 is REALLY high for MSRP.

Remember they will tack tax and tag on that 31 so you'll wind up paying about 33 by the time it's said and done.

I went to Galpin... got the high-pressure sales tactic... "Oh yeah, order one now... put down a deposit... blah blah blah."

I had to go to San Diego to get my car and even then got slightly screwed by the dealer because she submitted my loan app without my permission as I was getting a loan through my credit union and not Ford.

X-Plan is definately the way to go. Had I known to do that or had someone directed me to do that when I was on here looking I would have... but no one did.

BTW you could have ordered a spoiler delete and premium interior on an 06 too... I did.

The difference should be between $2,300 and $2,400.

You should get clarification. A fair deal should be 2% above invoice not MSRP, meaning $1,700 - $1,800 off. That's the deal I worked out with my dealer and one which they settle for with customers who negotiate the price.

Like everyone else says... don't pay more than MSRP. I looked at the local dealers here, Board Ford and Burch in Whittier and La Habra and ended up getting mine with X-Plan from Capo Ford in SJC. I lucked out 'cause my dad knows the Fleet manager and so I only dealt with her. I have no idea if you can call them up yourself and go right to fleet. I did, but that may be because I had an 'in' maybe not. I'd try it. Call the fleet dept. If you can do the internet sales and get a fleet mgr and not a regular sales rep. The fleet mgr people can set the price right then and there and the whole sales-rep/manager back and forth game is eliminated.

Good Luck.

I priced out a 2007 coupe with the Shaker1000, IUP, Comfort group, 18" wheels, side airbags, and active antitheft. Basically, my car with the upgraded stereo and the comfort group, and it stickered at $32,700, or something stupid like that.

Wow they must have gone up a lot.

I got a 2006 with all of that minus the Shaker and "Comfort group" (they didn't offer that on mine) and it was around 26,500

Mine stickered around 29K, and that's a coupe with all options except auto and the Shaker 1000.

When I first started selling cars in 1996, a fully loaded 'vert with auto was 28K. It's mind blowing to see prices so elevated.

The vert that I just ordered stickers at $37k and that is without an auto or Sirius. 37k for a Mustang, good freakin lord!! But you pile the stuff on and it adds up quickly! They give you lots of choices.

Make sure you're talking to the dealer in the right terms, ie. MSRP does NOT equal invoice. Two completely different numbers, and if they think that YOU think they're the same, they'll start watering at the mouth wanting to get a bite of the sucker.

Invoice is what they pay for the car, so 2% over that is fair. MSRP is what Ford suggests they sell for, which is probably 4% or more over invoice. If they mark-up another 2% over MSRP, you're getting royally screwed.

MorrisMustang,

Walk in. Smile from ear to ear. Offer them Invoice plus $500 (assuming you're not going X-Plan). Write the sales order right on the spot to lock them in. Give them a refundable deposit of $500. The minute they balk, get up, shake their hand, tell them thank you, and wander down to the the next nearest Ford dealer.

I got my GT for $500 over invoice. And they're making money at that! But it's a fair price and you'll feel like you got a good deal. It's enough profit for the dealer that (hopefully) they won't treat you like doo-doo.

Oh, and did I mention they have Grabber Orange this year?

Thanks guys. All that advice is good. Im waiting to see this next week if I can get a X plan pin #. If not, I have no problem paying INVOICE + 2%, not 2% over MSRP. I will see soon enough. In the meantime, the dealer just called me today to tell me that they went ahead and ordered the vehicle per my order, "no pressure". If I don't want it, they will sell it to someone else.....Well, as soon as I get this pricing finalized, I will leave a $500 deposit and get a copy of the DORA. The car is a '07 GT Windveil Blue Premium, charcoal interior, premium Interior, comfort group, 5 spd. , spoiler delete, side airbags, shaker 500, dark iup, fanblades. I will keep you posted. Thanks for the advice.

Invoice is not what the dealer pays for the vehicle. The dealer actually pays a percentage under invoice. This is called the dealer holdback. Read about it here.

There isn't a dealer in this country that's going to go into holdback to sell an '07 Mustang GT at this point in time.

Good choice with the windveil blue. Great, classic color, and of course, my personal favorite.
