I've heard that Ford purposely distanced from the P-51 theme because they wanted it to evoke care-free individualism, not war.

how about the mesteƱo? the spanish origin for the word mustang. It could be painted in a metallic gold/copper color with a beige interior to echo colors of the southwest deserts. DEFINITELY needs a ducktail, and perhaps instead of chrome horse, etc... a gold one.

have you ever heard of a ferrari 575 maranello or Enzo
M1 Rifle, it's too bad you don't buy cars ending with "o", I'm sure it must stink to know you would be excluded from the autos charles has pointed out such as the "maranello" and "enzo" or even the "murcielago" and "gallardo". but hey those cars are just beaters right? I :worship: to your obviously superior knowledge of quality automobiles.

On the GOOD CARS ENDING WITH "o" list, we have a few
-Enzo
-Maranello
-GTO (the old one!)
On the "other" list we have
-Pinto
-Camaro
-Ranchero
-El Camino
-Yugo
-Montego
-GTO (the new one!)
As I stated in another reply, I would never buy an expensive Ferrari. The $$$/fun factor isn't there. Besides, I have 2 daughters I need to put through college!

Given that you say that you heard that Ford rejected an idea because it was related to a military aircraft, I simply stated the Corvette was named after a military vessel, didn't seem to hurt it's sales. I'm not arguing with you, if anything I'm arguing agains't Ford's "anti-marketing" knuckleheads!
My idea is "Mustang Apex"
I, too, heard that the Mustang was named after the fighter jet. But since a few other fords are named after horses (pinto, bronco), I assumed it was named after the horse.
EDIT: I didn't mean jet. I knew that it was a prop. plane.

There's more to marketing and imaging than sales numbers. The original Mustang was such an out-of-the-park hit from day 1 in design that it probably would have sold if it's name was Mud. That being said, thre is more to marketing than the look of the final product, and carefully grooming the brand is part of it.
I didn't say they rejected it, I said they distanced from it. How many times have you seen the old ads with the 65 coupe driving next to the herd of wild horses? Now how many Ford commercials depict imagery of the P-51 taking on the Luftwaffe? The name may have been thrown into the hat (among many others, including Cougar) because some 60's Ford idea man had a thing for WWII aircraft, but I assure you the final name was chosen for different reasons.

I argued that the car was named after the horse. Period. Hence, my reply at one point about there being a HORSE on the front of the car (in 64.5 as well as today)
I think you want to pick an argument with someone else in this thread LOL.
