Does anybody have a plan on how to order a 2005 Mustang and not get overcharged? Obviously dealers will try to jack the price. Where I come from, it is a sin to pay above MSRP.

Just say "no" and mean it if they try to stick it to ya for ordering. Or even taking dealer stock. Walk out (nicely) on them if they try anything fishy, like say "Market adjustment."

And be sure to get every little detail in writing, of course. No add ons that way later, like etched windows or undercoating or some other goofyness you didn't ask for.

Other than that, well, it's up to your patience on whether you get stuck with a big bill or not, right?

I know they have the right to ask for whatever they can get. It's the bozos who pay that whatever price that keeps me away for a while, until the market settles down. I can wait. I've only been waiting 4 years. What's a few more months...

The cheapest way to buy a car is to use the internet. When pricing becomes availiable, go to every ford dealer's web site in your area and get their sales email addresses. Tell them all exactly what you want and they will all return you with prices. Go with the one that gives you the best deal.

My buddy just bought a Tacoma for 0% and $500 under invoice using this method.

Edmunds.com is a powerful tool as well. They will tell you what the invoices are and what you should be paying.

Never is a long time. I was among the first to buy a 2004 Honda Pilot and did not pay over MSRP. Buying a new model can be done without being taken by the dealer.

If anybody has anyting helpful to add that will aid my, and many other readers of this thread, goal of how to order a car, please reply.

The A-Plan and X-Plan purchases are possibilites that are very interesting. I'm looking into them. It would be great it I could get a '05 GT 'Vert slightly above ivnoice without haggling. Thank you very much for the suggestion! :worship:

I spoke to a sales rep today and he said I would need to put roughly 10% down when I order one in May.....does that sound right to anyone who has ordered before?

Talking

Anytime I've ordered a car...usually 500 - 1000 "REFUNDABLE" seems about the norm.

Although with the 05...
One wanted 5000 down, to have a definate delivery before Jan05.

I told him where to stick it

April,

What Boomer so eloquently meant was even tho you've ordered the car in May (if you choose to do so) you are by no means bound by anything to buy that car, until you've signed a buyer's agreement. Filing out an order form and giving the deal 10% if essentially just giving him $1800 to $3000 to hold on till you've completed paperwork, in June, or even September, whenever you chose. Boomer is right however, tell the dealer where to stick it, he just wants a fatty commission check now, rather than waiting a few months since you dont seem 'in the know.'

Believe me, i made the same mistake, i walked into a dealer back in February, and said, when's the best time to put money down on a 2005, the guy i talked to LIT UP in a hurry, a little too brightly, and told me now, definitely! So i would have handed him a thousand bucks for him to tell me that May 17th i could actually order whatever. Needless to say, changed the subject, talked for a while meaninglessly, and i left, money in my pocket, came here, was land-blasted for thinking of it and i've learned my lesson, so i share :usa:

if the dealer insists on 10% down at the order date, tell him where to stick it and go elsewhere, as Boomer did, again, eloquently

Thanks for the info guys. I am just so excited about the 05 that the dealer sees the "sucker" written across my forehead. I am glad I found this sight as I have learned a lot. I may shoot more questions your way.....

The salesman is also trying to evaluate whether or not you will actually buy the car. If they have some reason to think you might back out of it (or if they think you wouldn't qualify for financing) then they might not be in such a big hurry to order your specific color and options.

Maybe let them do a credit check? I dunno. I've never done this either. My new car purchases have all been the "year end closeouts on last year's model" kinda thing. But I do know there's definitely no need to put down 10%.

I won't be pre-ordering anyway. I'll wait it out, probably 'till spring of '05.

Edmunds is awesome! :worship: You can loos a couple of hours checking out cars there

Unless you plan on getting some 0% APR offer (highly unlikely on the new stang), your best bet is to go in to the dealership with a loan already aproved. The "walk away from the table" technique works wonders. Hear their initial offer, ask for a lower price, they might lower it a little, then walk away. You will see the price drop.

I've always wondered though, is the invoice they list REALLY invoice or not? (i figure I'd find out eventually but i'm just curious)
