Has anyone done this....

Is there anyway that you can force more air into the engine compartment to allowe the CAI to breath more? Such as a fender wall or lower grill tube to make more air come into the compartment. I know it sounds off the wall but I think I seen a picture with a tube coming from the frint gill and a hole in the fender (nicly done). I hope everyone doesn't think I'm but I think i'd be cool and .
Please advise even if it to say no way.

I did that on my '88... back when K&N was the only one with conical filters and "ram air" kits. I bought a 3" rubber hose... it looked a lot like a white vinyl dryer hose, but much heavier... and black, and I ran it from the lower air dam through the fender to point directly at my K&N. It cost me like $9. The only thing different that the "ram air" kit had was a box that encased the filter, so that air was rammed into the intake, as opposed to just flowing over the filter at a higher rate of speed. Anyways... those kinda went the way of the dodo, and I don't know why. Now it just seems that the thing is a piece of insulation forming a box to iscolate the filter from the warmer engine compartment, like in your picture. Someone else is going to have to tell you whether or not you get cooler intake temperatures from it.

I have seen something on the kenne bell site that has the CAI in the fender and not just sitting in the engine compartment. I haven't seen the complete diagram that shows how/where in the fender the CAI filter is though...

Along the same veins, has anyone insulated the tube (if that's what it can be called) from the filter to the Throttle body ?? I've seen plenty aluminum and plastic and while the filter may be a little separated from the engine heat this tube isn't ?? Maybe I'm too but it's a thought. **

** especially after reading the MM&FF article on CAI and how the WMS performed because it's bringing in air from the front of the car before it's heated up

Because of the way our cars are designed, there isn't much fender well to pull air from. (wheels are pushed so far forward)
After installing my CAI and then a Roush front fascia I really started looking at how the air flows. Looks to me like it comes in and hits the wheel well liner and goes straight up to the filter. Also, almost directly under the filter there's an triangular shaped opening in the framework that probably allows air to go up to the filter. If there wasn't a big bundle of wires going through that hole it would be a great place to run a hose from the front of the car.

Another alternative would be to cut a hole in the wheel well liner and attach a hose to it with it going to the filter. Wouldn't be "ram air", but it would be cold air.

It's amazing to me no one makes an enclosed air box that doesn't allow any hot air in. S&B would have a great product if there wasn't a HUGE hole in the back side of theirs. I hate the homemade looking CAI's that are out there right now.

MRT's has a metal intake tube. That is a no-no if you want cool air. Metal is a conductor.

The best thing I've seen is Kenne Bell's supercharger, which comes with a CAI that draws air from just behind the bumper, way down low. That's a true CAI, unlike the MMR one that I have on my car, which basically just relieves the restrictions of the stock airbox.

This KB ram air is exactly what I was talkin' about for my '88... I don't know why there hasn't been one made for anything newer...

Looks good. Maybe I can adapt it to my Airaid if they would be willing to sell the box seperately. (I agree with Shea about the tube) But only if they offer it in the black plastic they have in the first pic as opposed to the CF in the second pic.

Any pics of the KB setup?

I read somewhere that it didn't matter about the intake being metal or plastic and that people were making a big deal out of nothing I don't have any idea though.

Hey StangNut.. that box and tube is the KB setup.
Here's the link I got that from: http://www.kennebell.net/accessories...-93mustang.htm

That hose goes down through the fender, and that little scoop goes either in the lower air dam or is attatched below it.
