I was reading some info on Filter wraps this morning. Whats the deal with them? Do they provide any return on investment for $30? or are they just a gimmick?

If you live in a dusty area or go off-roading they might be of some use?

It is just a K&N condom, never seen the second pic before though.

My thought is the filter is there to filter stuff, so why do I need a filter for the filter?

Because lie so many High Flow Filters, the elements do not filter everything out that it should. Again, if you drive around in very dusty environments these "Pre-Filters" are for you if you dont mind the look.

Well I suppose living in Arid-zona qualifies me for driving in a dusty environment. On the other hand this still seems somewhat gimmicky to me.

The infornation that comes with the cloth prefilter states it will trap matter larger than .005. I have one on my JTL but would not have purchased if I had known this. It was a $30 waste. Would be great for dirt track racers filtering out the big stuff.

Always seemed to me that one of these would be more effective inside the filter than outside. That way it would only have to trap the particulates that made it through the main filter.

So basically this means buying a high-flow filter, then covering it to absorb ALL particles, ending up with a low-flow filter...
Pretty big investment for a filter with stock properties and just a different design...

I worked on Dirt Late Model racecars for a lot of years. We used the "Panties" as we called them on the filters to keep the big-chunks from getting embedded in the filter itself. Every time the car hit the track she was wearing a fresh pair of panties..
For the street - I would think them to be very ineffective..
