I was wondering about the quality of window tint that the dealer installs and approx. what it costs. I'm looking to sneak that into my purchase deal. My price is already set, but if you don't ask, you don't know.
Thanks
The dealer is gonna charge you $400 to have the same guy tint your windows who would charge you $200 if you went right to him.

SixtySix - it is very very very very very very difficult to get tint to stick to that black-dot stuff.. its almost impossible. That's why you havent seen any cars with a clean tint around those dots.

Well I've done a little research on the subject, and there are ways around it. The idea I like the most is NOT tinting the matrix area, then cutting a black piece of vinyl and literally pinstriping the area from the end of the tint to where the matrix begins.

I just have to find a tinter who's going to go that extra mile for a flawless job.

I have been doing that for years and it is easy for you to do yourself incase your car was not done that way. Go to a local sign shop and get a scrap piece of black vinyl. Use an xacto knife (or razor blade) to remove the tint from the "dotted" area. Using water and a little bit of soap apply the vinyl to the inside of the window. Use the knife again to cut the vinyl along the bottom of the window. Yes the vinyl can overlap the tint. Just remember you only want the vinyl to cover the dotted area. Use a hairdryer to heat the vinyl and remove as much of the water/soap mixture and air bubbles as possible. Within a day it will be completely dry. Any air bubbles that show can be removed with a pin. The entire process takes me about 10 minutes and I guess about 30 minutes for someone that has not done it before.

Oh ya, and people will have no idea that you did this because you can't tell from the outside and nobody would know the difference on the inside either.

Here is a pic of the back window of my 97 GT. You can't even tell that there is a dot matrix at the top of the window.

I have 20% on everything but the windshield and I have never been pulled over because of it (have been pulled over and received a speeding ticket but nothing mentioned about the tint). Personally I think 20% looks good, helps keep some of the sun out, and doesn't bother law enforcement enough to pull you over because of it.

I don't know what tint you guys have usually had installed, but the stuff they use at this dealership I go to is 3M tint and it is gooooddddddd!!! It actually is heated on and has a limited lifetime warranty if I remember right. The tint has never bubbled and I've never had problems with dot matrix areas. B)

3M makes great stuff, no doubt, in fact I just had my pool refinished with a 3M color quartz plaster.

All tint I have used is made by 3M. Did you watch the guys tint you back window? One trick to limit the haze effect around the matrix is to take a razor blade to the dots. No, I don't mean to remove them from the glass, just to wear them down so there are not as thick. The tint sticks better this way and that is what most of the pro installers do.

In the past when I've asked dealers to tint the windows, they've always subbed it out to one of the local tint shops. I've never had a situation where the dealer did it themselves. I always ask if they do it themselves and if not, which shop they use and if it's not one I trust, I'll tell them "no thanks" and take it somewhere I do trust. [/b][/quote]
Thats right.

Most dealers don't bother because there is no money to be made in window tint and a service department does not want to hear complaints about it.
