The mustang I have on order is going to be my first car.

What is the purpose of breaking it in, and what is the best way to do this. What should I avoid (I heard constant rpm is bad?)

I have never owned a new car, hopefully next year I'll get the mustang we'll see. I did rebuild my old '83 Toyota though. I had to make sure to seat my piston rings properly etc etc to prevent leaks and tailpipe blackening. So took it out to a back street. third gear, hard accel from 50 to 80 ... foot off the gas, let it coast ... repeat. I did that at least 15 to 20 times. Just let the engine work it self back and forth.

Now of course that is what I found on the internet and from the local gear heads .. it was also a rebuild, it was also a toyota ..

That is all I know

Nathan

The break in period lets all the parts such as the piston rings, cams, valves and other parts seat properly. It used to be a big deal in past years but not as much with the newer cars. Still I'd put about 500 - 800 miles on the car before you do any serious thrashing on it just to let the parts get some wear on them.

Duh, almost forgot this part. When breaking the car in just make sure you vary your rpms. Drive the car at all different speeds with various loads on the motor. Just try to avoid any WOT thrashings.

I drove mine hard right from the dealership, took it to the dragstrip with 300 miles on it, changed the oil at 500 miles, and runs perfect no problems at all

Drove Eleanor like I stole her.....Took me a whole 5 days to crack 1,000 miles.
Took her everywhere, then did it all over again.

Hey wait- still doing that 6 months later...

Now that she's fixed, shes almost perfect(the AC tick still drives me nuts)
