Hey Dan, are you graduating this month? I've got another year of school left, but I'm wondering how the job market for civil/structural is these days. I'm in California and it was a great market when I entered school, but I'm not so sure anymore.

In the "old days" when you rebuilt an engine, the box that the rings came in said to take the car on the high way, shift to high gear at 40 mph, and floor the throttle till 60 mph, let off and repeat 3 or 4 times. This would seat the rings. You don't see that on the boxes anymore though.
Really, it comes down to how "round" your "round" parts are. The better the machine work, and the "slicker" the finish is on the cylinder walls, the less breaking in you have to do.
I'd go 50-100 miles, change the oil while the engine is hot, and drive it hard.

I know some cars come with a "breaker oil" that has to be changed after the first 500 miles or so the car is driven. Is this still standard practice?
(P.S. - Who will be using traditional oil and who will be using synthetic?)

If I'm correct, you don't break the car in by babying it. In fact I've heard, the cars that are run real hard in the break in period, they in fact last longer than the cars that are babyied.
With that in mind, you can't run it too hard either...For instance, no burn outs, and no top end speed, keep it under 90...I think the correct thing to do as soon as you get it, is take it up to 35 or 45MPH, and then floor it till it gets up to about 60 or 65MPH, and the repeat the process about 10 times.
I've also heard you don't want to keep the car at the same speed...try to drive at different speeds and keep away from the cruise control a bit....
I dunno if this is right though.

I want a $dollar for every driver on here that has not driven a V8 for an extended period of time that DOES NOT burn them off once or twice right after they purchase it.
I'm gonna be rich .... Help me pay for the next Snake.

89 IROC Z? That's a good one. Well, at least you won't have to push your stang to the limit right off the bat.
