REAL MEN only drive manual transmissions...
Richard
You are joking around right? Everyone knows that REAL MEN only drive manual transmissions. If your preference is to ride like the “lady’s” with an Automatic transmission rather than drive like the real men with a manual transmission, that’s cool, but please don’t try and BS us about it…

I'm 100% certain there are many cases where an auto is faster than a manual, but to say that the auto shifter in the Mustang will beat the guy next to you in a manual is 100% ignorant. I've got no problem with the auto tranny, I'd like to have one of each, and you don't see me saying bad things about the auto so I don't know what your problem is.

I can't speak definitively as to which is faster, but the TMS times seem like good solid indicators. Also, there's other types of racing besides drag racing. It seems to me that on a road course, a manual would have a definite advantage since the driver has more control over engine speed, gear, etc.
In the issue of "May 2008-Mustang &Fast Fords" cover story ,a STOCK Roush 427R-mustang "AUTOMATIC" ran in the 12.20's best pass, with pass's in the 12.32 at 109.36 miles an hour, this is the same STOCK 5 speed auto in all the mustang GT's ,the stock auto will hold up to 435 hp,all day long, and all my replies are always sent repeatfully, facts are facts...

If you want to be a legend in your own mind, fine, but basing the idea of "smoking" a car based on nothing but shift points is pretty weak. Autos are more consistent, but manuals allow you to make decisions. There are advantages to both, and not all of life is spent in a straight line.
" I 'm back", had some work done on my auto-stang,well I'm not really stock anymore ,so I will move on from this thread ,hope all you( real men )have fun playing with your sticks," while I pass you on the road, please no hard feelings guys , see you in my rearview,
stock to stock the manual trans DEF pulls harder. no question.. BUT if the driver of the manual trans car cannot drive an automatic is faster. BOTH auto and 5 speed are tops in my book so who cares whos faster?
All my timeslips are on modular fords for my 07 GT/CS.Post was on 12-7-06, you can see stock, and tuned with just superchips 91 tune with K&N and a JLT. If you get better, more power to you but like i said i have not seen it.When someone can run the 13.3s with just that done i dont think that is that bad for an auto.

Sorry but when the car starts to be heavily modded then everyone wants an automatic.
The guys pushing big numbers on manuals are all the same ones that have switched to a 4r70w or soemthing of that nature.
Manuals are fun but they are not really any advantage in stock cars and are a detriment ina high power car.

As for the ever present argument, auto vs. manual...The current auto is lightyears ahead of previous autos but they still result in more parasitic power loss than the manual trans. Sure, the autos are very consistant on the strip, just turn off TC and press the go pedal. But when a manual trans driver launches and hits the shifts perfectly, the auto can be beaten.
For me it is just more fun to drive a stick and it definitely comes in handy on the road coarse to put you in the right powerband for exiting turns and it also allows engine braking when entering turns.
Plus it is less plumbing to worry about!
I think you mean 3.31's.. actually the 3.31's were standard in both trannies in 07 too
Ford changed to 3.33's stock in the manual (like the auto) most likely to better meet CAFE requirements.

Man does this thread go all over the place. As was correctly mentioned by at least a couple here, today's automatics are now well capable of outperforming their manual counterparts. This should be no surprise since several OEMs have managed to have their auto-equipped models outperform their manual variants for years. Hell, Ford managed to have the first auto-equipped SHO Taurus's post better lap times than the manual versions. A couple years ago, Pontiac's auto-equipped GTO was quicker 0-60 and through the 1/4. Most high-end OEM's have moved from full manual transmissions to sequential-shift autos, and drag racers have been using autos for decades.
As for which will out-perform which in any particular car depends on several factors so it's virtually impossible to make a sweeping generalization that would place one transmission above the other.
Bottom line, a properly programmed auto "CAN" out-perform a manual in virtually ANY race.
That being said, I STILL prefer a manual in my off-road and performance vehicles even though I realize they may not represent the ultimate in performance capability. Plus, face it, the manuals in these Mustangs REALLY SUCK!!!!

Statements like that wont get you any respect on this or any other forum.
not in the S197. The shifting and clutch is the very best I have ever driven in my 47 years.
