Why hasn't anyone mentioned that the auto handle just looks plain dorky?

Wow, I'm surprised by the number of Mustang fans who have no clue.... The fact of the matter is that a 5-speed manual Mustang is faster than an automatic transmission Mustang, all else equal. If automatic owners are bragging that they beat a stick shift version, then it's simply because the driver of the stick shift car didn't drive his Mustang as well as he should have.

Automatic transmissions have definitely narrowed the gap, especially these days because they have more gears than ever, but they still have torque converters which will always sap up some of the power and waste it. On the other hand, a manual trans is directly driven, not driven by fluid in the torque converter like an automatic tranny.

Bottom line is the stick shift version is still a faster car, but the problem is that the automatic is easier to drive because there's very little chance of messing up. So to all of you automatic guys--enjoy your bragging right and hope that you don't come across a stick shift owner that knows how to drive his car.

is that why Ford had to put a higher gear so the stick could do all ( you ) say is true, but as shown in this form ,with the same gears 3:55 or 3:73 in each car things are different, when I started all this a few months ago, I said stock,so now you can get both gears-from Ford in the new Mustangs, and who said I only had a stock Auto-3:31 rear gear ?

Similar mods (CAI, 93 oct tune) between an auto with 3.73 gears vs. me with 3.55s in my manual, I was still able to get a faster overall ETs and speeds against that auto when comparing best timeslips. Heck, I posted faster "best" times when I was bone stock in my manual than the "best" times of some autos that already had CAI's and tunes!

But in any given race, that same auto could beat me, or I could beat the auto, depending on how well I nailed the launch in my manual.

Rick, given an auto or manual with similar mods, why can't we just agree it would be a driver's race, without all the name-calling and other BS?

since 07 both the manual and auto GT's are 3.31 equipped standard. I can tell you without doubt that a 5 speed car pulls harder then an automatic.. (both stock) All bets are off once you modify em.. Im a drag racer with 30 years racing experience so I can speak with authority when I make a statement like that..

In 4th gear, with the same rear end, the manual will be faster... less loss.

If anyone saw my data post, the automatic is aided by considerable higher gear ratios.

I see this thread still going.. so I thought to post my experience.

My car is 2008 GT with 5-speed manual transmission but with 3.31 gear ratio (my dealer forget to order the 3.55 for me

I raced many Mustangs (all autos because manual is very rare here). I can beat the autos from any speed. However, I once raced a modified auto (CAI, cat back and a tune) and here is the video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKIpm8_r5Iw (the auto owner created the video, go to 30 seconds to see the race)

My car is on the right.. at the time of the race, my car had 1,800 on the odometer and I had the TCS swithced on. We started from 40 km/h (25mph) and I was in 1st gear. His car was fast in 1st and 2nd only (you can notice that my car was 1/2 car back and he pushed earlier as well). I was able to catch him immediately after I pushed it and by the time I engaged 3rd, I was leaving him back but he stopped becasued the road was getting some corners and it was dangerous to continue.

You can notice that he is writing that he is the winner and you can not that he wrote:
mustang 2007 auto (stock) vs mustang 2008 manual (stock)

and yes.. both our cars are BLACK
