Trouble Starting Up
Good afternoon to all. I got a question that hopefully someone will be able to help me with. In the past week or two, sporadically, my mustang has had trouble starting up. The engine turns over fine, and the battery was replaced the end of summer 03.
The first time she hesitated, I thought it was because of was really low on gas and almost out. Then a couple days later, it did it again when I had nearly 3/4 tank of gas.
I went out again last night to a haunted forest out in the country about 30 miles away. When I left my house, she started fine, went to pick up my girl friend, went into her house (about 2 or 3 miles away), came back out, she started up fine again.
We drove all the way out there, went through the haunted forest, (took about an 1.5 hours) came back out and tried to start her up, the engine turned over, but wouldn't start.
After a couple seconds, I stop and let her sit for a minute, then re-tried and she cranked after about a second (fyi, I had about 1/4 tank of gas). We left there went to sheetz to get some gas, got gas, and got back into my car and she started up fine again.
I have been discussing it with a friend of mine, who is a novice mechanic, and he seemed to think that it could be the fuel filter. What do you guys think? If it is the fuel filter, where is it located on the car(i have a 95 gt)? Is it something that I could do myself? Thanks for you alls time and sorry, I didn't mean to write a book.

I'm not much of a mechanic, but I would start with the following things, especially if they hadn't been done in a while.
Replace plugs, plug wires, and fuel and air filters. Maybe clean the throttle body.
Somebody with 5.0 experience should chime in for anything more to add.

fuel filter is definately an option. another cause could be the idle control valve. to be honest I don't even know if the 5.0 has the same kind as my 96, but i was having a similar problem and that fixed it.
definitely try the fuel filter. next time it happens turn off everything and shut the doors. and listen to see if you can hear the fuel pump turn on and hum for a second and stop. if you dont hear it when it wont start, it could be the fuel pump isnt working properly.
If it's like my 2002, it's at the rear of the car. See the attached link.

It should be at the rear as Kyle stated.
Btw, what up Kyle

I had the same thing happen with my beater toyota. Surprisingly, the filter is right inside the engine compartment. All i had to do to change it was unattatch two hoses, and put the new one in. If it turns out that it is not the filter(although it should be changed anyway) Try cleaning the throttle body.
