you SHOULD be fine with 87 octane, as that is what the cari s tuned for, however some people have detonation problems with it and use premium.
as for quick, cheap mods, look into underdrive pulleys, steeda timing adjuster, gears, springs to get ride of the 4x4 look, and an offroad x or h pipe.

if its a 5-speed, get a shifter. It will feel like you gained Hp, but you didnt, just 10x better shifts.
Other than that, I echo what Ua2k1gt said.

These guys pretty much covered it all. Definately get the Springs to drop the height, U/D pullies and T/A are good, always nice to have a rumblin' exhaust, CAI, bigger Throttle Body, gears, shifter. Those should make you a happy guy. Oh! Oh! Get a new upper intake plenum! Easy HP to be had for a relatively cheap price. I hear Accufab has a good one but it's all in your personal preference.

just filled her up on mon. w/ premium. seems like im getting better mpg, and its running really smooth. gonna let it go through the system for a while, ill stick w/ premium. if, i see any problems, def. gonna switch *Crosses fingers*. as for upgrading gears, a neighbor of mine had a '98 cobra w/ 4:10's...and he used em.... i was thinking about picking some up... im not really concerned about my top end, cause if i were to try and get the most of the engine that way, this would be an obituary, not a simple post :P - thx for your help fellas, this site rocks
