Alright, a year ago or so I was playing around with the airbag
out of my '94 mustang. I made the mistake of taking it out,
and starting the car before I put it back in. The air bag light
came one, which I wasn't too concerned with, thinking it would
go off when I put it back in. Well apperantely the '94 and '95
Mustangs have a code for and air bag problem, then there is
a different code that basically says that there was a problem
with the air bag's but it has been fixed. So I had to take it to
my local mechanic (I refuse to go to the dealer unless I absolutely
have too) he ended up having to buy a book that would tell him
the sequence to go through to reset the light.

All was well and fine for almost a year, then the light came back
on. I did some research and the predominant opinion was that
there was a bad part behind the steering wheel (I can't remember
the name of it). So I had that replaced, it wasn't too long until
it came on again. It would always start with the code that indicates
a problem, then after a few days change to the code indicating the
problem would be fixed, I would go and have it reset, and the
sequence would repeate every couple of days. Finally I was able
to get the car to him with the code indicating a problem. After playing
around with the wiring going into the airbag computer module the
code switched. So he thinks the problem is with the computer, my
question is has anyone ever had or heard or an Airbag going bad?
Is there anyway to rule out that it is the Airbag? I had thought of
disconnecting the bag and placing a resistor across the terminals
to see if the problem continued to happen, but I don't know what
the resistance across the bag is supposed to be.

Again any thoughts or help would be more than appreciated.

I used to work at a dealership and we would have airbag light issues on the cars from time to time, usually it was just some sort of sensor that cost around $100 to fix. I hate to say it, since you do not like to go to the dealer, but you might want to let them tackle this and end the frustration...hopefully it is something in expensive.

Would that not show up in a code somewhere? What
kind of sensors are there on the Airbags?

Not sure I am no mechanic by any means, just know it was something electronic and was not expensive to fix and was fairly common on all the Fords.

I had the clock spring replaced about 18 months ago, which
from what I was able to find on the net is a very common
problem with these cars. But the problem still exists, so... I
will check and see if there are any sensors for the airbag that
are external to the airbag computer module.

id say pull the bag off again and check for bad connections. sounds like a wire is getting pinched and throwing a code to the computer. then the wire gets free for a while and the code comes up the problem is fixed. then after driving a while the wire gets pinched. good luck electrical gremlins are a real pain

That's kind of what my mechanic thinks is happening, but
he thinks it's on the computer end. He said he was able to
wiggle the wires where they go into the computer and the
code changed on him when he did that.

Sometimes the codes can take a few days after you reset them to come back on. The problem may not have actually gone away when the light was coming back on after a few days.

I agree, take it to someone that knows Fords in and out. It may be a Ford quark. At the dealerships, they know exactly what the codes mean, not what they usually mean. Some dealerships stink, but most of them have guys with experience in Fords.

Have you ever tried messing with the seat belt sensor? It may coincidentally have happened at the same time. I've had this problem when a bottle of water rulls under the seat and bumps the plug loose.

Yeah, but the code switches back and forth between there being a
problem with the airbags to there was a problem with the airbags
that has been corrected, so I doubt it's a situation where the code
just takes a few days to come back, but I would guess there is definately
a loose wire or something somewhere.

I haven't tried messing with the seatbelt sensor, and I can't imagine
it having anything to do with the airbag light, but I will check it out
and make sure it's not loose.

As for going to a dealer, at this point it's more of an annoyance than
a problem, and I'm really not ready to go that route yet.

You should have two airbag sensors under your hood near the front bumper, one on each side. Just for giggles I would check the connections to those sensors.

Maybe this will help. Read very carefully. There is a lot of very good information here.
