I have an 01 3.8l that when the engine gets warm it will start knocking.
When the engine is cold it runs and sounds great but once it gets close to operating temp it starts knocking, its sound like a lifter but wouldn't that knock all the time not when just warm? It has plenty of oil pressure according to the gauge. Thanks

Oil thins as it gets warm. So the noises are more likely when warm. Check for metallic particles in the metal. And you can't trust the gauge. It's a fake gauge and does not show actual pressure.
And welcome to the forum!
And welcome to the forum!
I have checked the oil and it is full.
I have a friend who is a mechanic and he thinks its a lifter, but I am not sure it isn't the oil pressure not being high enough when the engine warms up and the oil thins out. I put 10-30W in it.
I removed the valve cover and inspected the rocker arms and springs while it was running and it looked good, it had plenty of oil coming out but if I just let it idle it wouldn't throw it out onto the exhaust or anything else but when the revved the engine it would get some on the exhaust but but not much.
I also removed the rocker arms and push rods and rolled the rods on a flat surface and they looked really good and straight and they where hot when I checked them.
Us there a way I can check the oil pressure manually?
Also I have one at a time removed a spark plug wire while the engine was running and didn't notice any difference in knocking, it ran ruff.
I am tried to decide on what to do next,
1. remove the upper and lower intake and check the lifters
2.Remove the oil pan and look for metal shavings and possibly change the oil pump.
3. Remove the exhaust from the engine and make sure it isn't leaking, but I highly doubt it is an exhaust leak.
Any input would be very helpful!!

I think I am going to remove the oil pan which I know it is a pain to do it and see whats in there if anything and also change the oil pump (it has a leak where it bolts on) in the front of the engine the oil filter screws onto it (Oil filter is not leaking) and go from there.

lifters go "tick" and rods go "knock" two different sounds..You can pull the oil filter off and Polk in it for metal shavings before you go and pull off the pan. Easier and less time consuming
Good point on the oil filter!!!!
As far as the sound it to me sounds like a lifter just louder than I have heard. That is why I referred to it as a knock.
