Too much $$$ for a clutch replacement?

As posters heare advised last week, my 89 has a thro-out bearing going away. The car has 73,000 on it. Our independent mechanic says if we're going to do the throw-out, we should do the clutch, pressure plate, etc., at the same time. He says $650. Is that pretty fair? Thanks in advance!

For $650 I would dang sure make certain I was getting a VERY GOOD clutch. Considering most average clutches only cost $200, that leaves $450 for labor. Pretty dang high in my book. Sorry but it sounds like the guy is trying to ream you to me.

I'm wondering what your "mechanic" means by "etc." ?? $650 sounds kinda EXPENSIVE for a clutch, pp, and throwout
. Even having the flywheel resurfaced/ground wouldn't cost more than $35 at most shops! I'd be asking for a break out of the "etc".

Yes, I forgot to mention the flywheel. It sounds as though he is kinda high. However, since the wife is no longer in the mood for the 2005 GT Mustang, I darn sure want to keep my '89 in great shape and not let little (or big) things start adding up where, all at once, faced with a plethora of repairs, she'll want it gone. I like to stay on top of the repairs - and I have for the 16 years I've owned the car. Thanks for the responses!
