Fuel filter

I just purchased a 1966 coupe with the 200i6 engine. I noticed that in addition to the fuel filter attached to the carb, there is another fuel filter just prior to the fuel pump. Is this normal? I know the 200i6 is not for racing but it is what I had 40+ years ago. The engine is sluggish and hesitates and I'm confident the carb needs to be tuned up. I would appreciate any suggestions to improve the running of the engine. Also, is there an EFI conversion kit for a 200i6? Thanks.

i would think a fuel filter before the fuel pump would create a sort of vacuum situation .. remove it if you can and install a straight piece of metal line ..as far as the sluggishness and hesitation i would start with the timing .. sounds like it may be a bit retarded ..advance it a bit but not to the point of engine ping ..

Thanks. I pulled the fuel filter off that was before the fuel pump and it is full of rust. I don't know how long the car has sat but the gas did smell old. My plan is to drain the tank, fill it with fresh gas, reinstall a new filter and keep an eye on it and change it periodically until I see an improvement. Then I'll remove that filter if all goes well. If it persists, then I guess a new fuel tank is in my future.
