Ruffian Boss 427 Mustang - SEMA 2019

Hanging out at the Toyo Tire booth at SEMA 2019, Ruffian Cars’ take on the Boss Mustang is track-ready and mad streetable.

November has been a crazy time for us at The Mustang Source. If we weren’t living it up in the desert sands and neon lights of Las Vegas at SEMA 2019, we were laughing at ’80s sci-fi movie props while looking forward to the electric Mustang SUV’s future at the Los Angeles Auto Show. All that awaits us now are some turkeys, a few good deals, and a time to look back on the final year of the New ’10s.

Why not start looking back now, though? We have this set of photos from the Toyo Tires booth at SEMA 2019 we’d love to share with you, featuring a boss-ass Boss 427.

This widebody Mustang was built by Ruffian Cars over the course of two and a half years, beginning when founder Chris Ashton bought a 1970 Mustang off of Craigslist in early February 2017.

Back then, the pony had been through a lot of work already. Under the hood was a 351 Windsor V8, a C4 automatic transmission moved the power to the rear, and a set of 2000 Mustang GT seats kept everyone’s rears in check.

Since then, the Mustang went through an extensive rebuild to get it to SEMA 2019. For example, the vents and 427 badges are 3D-printed units made from nylon with chopped fiber.

The rear spoiler, meanwhile, is cut from aluminum, then given adjustable strut rods for that NASCAR look. A similar setup exists in front of the big 427 V8, an LS3-based unit from Blueprint Engines with 630 ponies on tap. A Super Magnum T56 six-speed manual moves those ponies to the new set of Toyo Proxies at the rear.

The Boss 427 Mustang was then given a big widebody kit, a few coats of green paint, and all of the touches to make this build stand out among the Mustangs and other rides at SEMA 2019.

“Inspired by the legendary Boss Mustangs of the Trans-American Sedan Championship race series of of the late ’60s and early ’70s, this street or track build delivers distinctive race car looks, sound and simplicity while leveraging modern technologies for excellent streetability,” said Ashton in his blog about the Mustang. We think he achieved his goal with this build.
