1969 Boss 429 Mustang with only 18,000 miles at Mecum Auctions

Wimbledon White ’69 Boss 429 thought only to have 18,000 original miles comes stacked with paperwork and matching numbers.

Take a good long look, because you aren’t going to see another one like this any time soon. The Boss 429 Mustang is a very rare car. Its original intent was to homologate the 429 cubic-inch semi-hemispherical engine. This engine is Ford’s answer to the iconic 426 Hemi. In total, only 859 were built in 1969. Now, after fifty years, finding one in any condition is getting tough. Let alone one as stunning as this.

Mecum Auctions will be letting this gorgeous example roll across the auction block during the Kansas City event December fifth through the seventh. While the website doesn’t list an estimated sale price, there is another Wimbledon White 1969 Boss 429 for sale in California with an asking price of $269, 950. This one, however, is only believed to have 18,000 original miles. Furthermore, it comes with all kinds of paperwork. It’s build sheet, Kar-Kraft shipping invoice, Ford build letter, 429 shipping log,  and even it’s Lois Eminger held invoices are included.

This car exists specifically for this engine. First released in 1969, this engine was developed by Kar Kraft, who is also famed for assisting in the creation of the Ford GT40. It outputs a whopping 390 horsepower and only comes mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Due to emissions standards and taxes at the time, Ford dealerships advertised them with only 375 horsepower.

Interestingly, the Boss 429 is not as proud of itself as other performance mustangs of the era. The Boss 351, Boss 302, and Mach 1 all have a notable exterior design. However, the Boss 429 is only identifiable by the Boss 429 stickers and its hood scoop. We like the subtlety at play here. If you know, you know.

In 1969 these had only a few color options. Raven Black, Wimbledon White, Royal Maroon, Candy apple Red, and Black Jade were your exterior options. However, in true Ford fashion, the only interior color you could get was black. An easy way to tell 1969 apart from a 1970 Boss 429 is the fact that in 1970, the hood scoops were all painted matte black. Whereas in 1969, they matched the body color.

While we can’t be certain about the sales price, we can tell you it’s going to be very high. In 2013 an all-original Boss 429 went for $417,000 at Mecum. Additionally, in 2016, another one sold for $500,000 at Barrett-Jackson in Palm Beach. All we can say for sure is it’s going to be an eye-watering number! Whoever wins it, though, is lucky enough to own an iconic part of Ford and Mustang history.
