Mustang Shelby GT500 Heritage Edition Brings Out the Primate in Everyone

The Mustang Shelby GT500 Heritage Edition proves that they don’t make ’em like they used to, and that isn’t so bad.

With the brand new, S650 2024 Ford Mustang coming soon, we are on the verge of bidding farewell (temporarily, at least) to the mighty king of the pony car hill, the Shelby GT500. However, it’s worth enjoying and appreciating this high-horsepower machine while we still have it, as well as V8-powered muscle cars in general, which seem to be doomed to repeat what happened to the dinosaurs eons ago. And that’s precisely what the YouTubers behind the channel Savage Geese have done in this video – show love for the Mustang Shelby GT500 Heritage Edition for what it does to us – as in, returning us to our evolutionary roots.

Yes, we’re talking about the fact that a high-horsepower V8 like the one present in the Mustang Shelby GT500 Heritage Edition – its supercharged, 5.2-liter Predator V8 cranking out 760 ponies – makes us behave more like apes than humans. We smash the throttle, giggle like little kids, and perhaps even let out a grunt or two while doing so. There’s certainly nothing wrong with paying homage to evolution, even if you don’t believe in it, so why not just have some fun with it?

The Heritage Edition is little more than an appearance package, of course, adding some extra visual retro flair to an already decidedly retro package. But as our host points out, the latest GT500 is basically just a “fire and brimstone locomotive from the 1800s. All it wants to do is go sideways, smoke its rear tires, and potentially kill you.” And that’s precisely why we love it so much, of course.

Some modern tech does go a long way in taming this car’s 760 raging horsepower, and it has multiple driving modes to suit one’s mood. And in fact, when you turn off the traction control and electronic nannies, it doesn’t immediately go sideways, as our host explains, which is often the case with some older, high-horsepower cars. As such, you can actually “drive it like a monkey,” a good analogy since monkeys aren’t exactly the best drivers out there.

Ultimately, the GT500 satisfies our hosts’ primal desires and is admittedly one of their favorite cars on the planet at the moment for those very reasons. But it’s also quite tame and reasonable during regular driving situations, which somewhat challenges the old saying “they don’t make them like the used to.” In this case, that might just be a good thing.
