Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Code Red Teaser

This year’s Woodward Dream Cruise will see the debut of the very special, very powerful Shelby GT500 ‘Code Red.’

The iconic Woodward Dream Cruise takes place this weekend in Detroit, and as most Blue Oval fans are well aware, Ford has long been a big sponsor of the world’s largest one-day gathering of cool cars on earth. In fact, the event has its very own Mustang Alley dedicated to Ford’s legendary pony car, and the automaker also routinely brings out all kinds of cool vehicles for us to scope out. This year, however, is a special one for Shelby American as well, as it’s celebrating its 60th anniversary. To mark that occasion, the company that bears Carroll Shelby‘s name will be revealing the all-new Shelby GT500 Code Red at Woodward.

Shelby has teased this new offering on social media multiple times, giving us a mere glimpse at a machine it calls “its newest halo car.” Otherwise, the company isn’t spilling the beans on what we’re looking at just yet, though Hot Cars managed to get some more info on it recently. Turns out, halo is a good word for the Shelby GT500 Code Red, because it’s going to be packing some serious heat in the form of over 1,000 horsepower.

The new Code Red – which borrows its moniker from a 2008 GT500 one-off experimental prototype – utilizes a pair of turbos in place of the Predator’s factory supercharger, which will help it generate 1,000 horsepower on regular gas, or 1,300 raging ponies on E85. It’s truly a fitting tribute to the original Code Red, which also pumped out four-digit horsepower thanks to its Nelson Racing Engines-built turbocharged 5.4-liter V8.

Aside from that giant upgrade, the GT500 Code Red will also wear a wide body kit and plenty of red accents, along with new wheels and stickier tires. Not much else is known at this time, save for the fact that Shelby will build a total of just 30 units – 10 each for the 2020, 2021, and 2022 model years. Pricing figures to be rather high given this car’s performance potential and rarity, but we won’t have to wait much longer to find out the rest of these details, at least.
