Mustang Shelby GT350R Makes a Pretty Killer Daily Driver

By -

In the old days, purpose-built track cars were awful to live with. But the Mustang Shelby GT350R is surprisingly practical.

Purpose-built cars like the Mustang Shelby GT350R, traditionally speaking, aren’t designed to drive every day. They’re built for one reason and one reason only – to dominate race tracks. There’s a reason why things like air conditioning and radios are options on the Shelby GT350R, after all. Those little convenience features are nothing more than extra weight, and weight is the enemy of speed. So you’d be forgiven for thinking that living with something like this on a daily basis might be a bit rough.

But cars have come a long way in recent years. Fewer concessions are necessary, and performance no longer comes at the expense of things like fuel economy or comfort. So it’s fair to wonder if the old adage that purpose-built, turnkey racers don’t make great daily drivers still holds true today. To find out, YouTuber EddieX grabbed the keys to his buddy Matt’s Shelby GT350R for the weekend. Oh, if only we had friends this cool.

So what does he think? Well, the obvious bits are the car’s “glorious” noises and “addictive” acceleration. But then it’s time for a real test – a trip to Costco. The giant box that never lets you escape without buying massive quantities of things you never knew you needed. But hey, the lack of a rear seat provides plenty of room for huge boxes of cheesy snacks, right?

Turns out, that wasn’t even necessary as the Mustang’s trunk swallows up some giant bags of popcorn and an economy size pack of toilet paper. Eddie calls the Shelby GT350R “very practical” as it swallows up all of his gear, too. With a new set of Michelin rubber, it even has grip in wet weather. And on the freeway, the car doesn’t murder your ears with drone. So there you have it – the Mustang Shelby GT350R is a perfectly practical daily. Albeit one that looks, goes, and sounds amazing.
