OK guys I don't know a ton about cars but I am learning as I go. Now to my question. My V6 seems a little hesitant to go sometimes. I have an automatic trans. and have been reading about the throttle or lack there of at times. I read about the GT having a throttle by wire is that true of the V6 Auto tran as well? Also since my Stang is in the shop right now I was reading about the over drive, and how turning it off helps remove some of the throttle lag, so I tried it in my 2003 V6 Truck. I noticed it jumped off from a dead stop MUCH faster but something worried me I was going about 85 and the RPM's sat at 3400 and no matter what I did they would not go down. I can usually take my foot off the gas and it will shift and drop down. Is that normal for a car to do? I know that the over drive makes you shift faster to get to 5th where the RPM's are lower and you get better gas mileage but that really made me worry. So can someone help me?

 

I would recommend any one of the various 87 Octane computer tunes for the V6 - 89 if you feel like even more get up and go. I got the one from Alternative Auto as their is specifically set up for the auto tranny V6.

I reflashed with the 87 octane tune last weekend and that annoying auto transmission hesitation is GONE!

 

Thanks for the info! Still with the O/D off is it normal for a V6 going 85 with the pedal lightly depressed to stay at 3400 RPM even though I took my foot off the gas?

 

That is normal, taking over drive off gives you up to the 4th gear. Having it on will give you the 5th gear, so I reccomend you keep it on.

 

Hmm... thats interesting that you say that, I do alot of city driving and I have heard many GT owners turn the O/D off for the better throttle responce. Is it damaging the car to leave it off?

 

It shouldn't - but it will really trash your gas mileage.

I suggest treating your O/D like "Turbo Boost" . When I anticipate needing an acceleration boost based on traffic conditions, I punch off the O/D with my pinky finger. I also use it for "engine braking" when I want the car to slow down a little quicker than with the foot off the gas and I don't want to heat up the brakes.

 

Thats what I do as well.

 

The stock transmission shift schedule will try to shift into 5th (OD) at 30MPH at light throttle... 40MPH at medium throttle...

Around town turn the OD off and turn it back on for higher speed driving... or buy a tuner and change the shift schedule to your liking... LOL!

Also I don't know how turning the OD off could possibly help from complete, full, dead, nothing moving stop... LOL

 

O/D off should do nothing except keep you out of 5th gear. Its mainly designed for cars/trucks that tow, because if you are towing and it shifts to 5th, you will lose speed, shift to 4th, gain speed, shift to 5th, lose speed, etc etc so its extra work for the transmission.

 

I don't really get how it could help either, though it's a truck and it could be a placebo effect
