I have two questions. First, how wide are te stock rims on the V6? Second, how wide of tires can I put on these rims? The tires on the new V6 are too narrow, and I'd like to replace them with some wider rubber. However, I like the style of the V6 rims, and I don't want to add any extra weight that I have to get turning. I can tell by looking at the rims that there is still some room between the edge of the rim and the stock tires, but I don't know absolutely how wide I can go.

 

245/50/16...thats the widest im going...some tires give up to 10in wide.....

The rims are 16" by 7". 245/55's willl fit, although that's right at the edge of what's safe for 7" rims (245/50's are NOT recommended.)
I plan to go with 235/60's. If the car ever gets here.... :bang:

I just put 255/55/16 on my stock rims for he rear only, and they look great on the back of the car. Plus with this size my speedo is not affected.

well i had 245/50/16s on my camaro v6..and they were fine...but overall, the camaro and a mustang 2 separate cars...

 

Doesn't the V6 Camaro have 16 x 8 wheels, though?

 

According to Tirerack's specs, a 245/50/16 is approved for a 7" to 8.5" wide wheel. The slight difference in diameter would cause about a 5% speedo error, though.

Yes, I know. That's why I said 7" rims are right at the edge of what's considered safe. I'm sure they'll be fine, I'm just a bigger chicken than you are, which is why I'll stick with the 235's. They are approved for 6.5-8.5 rims.

By the way, it's only a 1.5% speedo error, not 5%. You won't even notice.

However, there's also another consideration for me: Tirerack has only ONE brand of tire in 245/55 size, and they cost $174 apiece. I plan to get the Kumhos in a 235/60 size, which are much more reasonable at $60. I had those on my V6 Firebird some years ago, and they worked well for me.


Slowjoe: you are right, the 245's will look massive on 16" rims. You can see what a difference they'll make in the illustration at the bottom of that tire-measurement site I posted above.

 

I'm with Rik, I wouldn't go any wider than 235mm on 7" rims. Adding wider tires doesn't do much good if you don't have rims wide enough to support the sidewall. IMO 235s on a 7" rim is already pushing it.

I plan to go with 235/60-16s, probably Traction T/As. These are "real" 6-rib Traction T/As, not the OEM 5-rib design that Ford uses on the V6. The tread is completely different - the 5-rib design looks like it was optimized for a quiet ride. I have 6-rib Traction T/As on my Honda, and they are a fantastic tire. A lot of other people seem to think so too:

BTW, 235/60-16 is almost identical in diameter to the stock 215/65-16s.

 

I understand what everyone is saying but I had a 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII "LSC" with the same size wheels 16" x 7". It came factory with 225/60/16 tires, however, I was able to put 245/50/16 on it with NO Problems!! It changed the whole look of the car.....Very aggresive looking. I know that our V6 wheel is also a 16" x 7", but it comes from the factory with a whimpy 215/65/16 tires and it takes away from the good looks of the factory rims. I just wish someone had photos of a 245/50/16 tire on the 2005 Mustang V6 Wheels. Bottom line is that I believe that it will work and that it will look Awesome!!! Can't wait to see someone try it. My $0.02
