I know Mike. It is the great thing, but I did get a little chuckle out of it.

I'm guessing it's a rural volunteer fire dept. and maybe they have to bring their own water.

Your both right. Our water supply sucks in our area, and we have a large river so its better than any hydrant we can get ahold of.

the trucks are 3500 sealed tanks, with a huge vacuum pump. That allows us to create a vacuum on the tank and through a 6" diameter hose, draft water from any standing source. At 20" of vacuum they will self fill in about 3min. Also you can pressurize the tank and basically shoot teh water out of the tank to completely unload it in under a minute. Just dont stand in front of the outlet. Also they each have a 1000gpm fire pump so you can technically fight a structure fire off of them without ever having an actual "engine".

But yes, septic tank trucks use this same style of setup for sucking well... poop.

Cheesy vid, but this explains it a whole lot better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQiOD_I4qwE

Do the trucks sit with water in them ready to go or they only filled when needed?

I've got a great idea. It involves a ninja suit, a brewery, and one or two of your new fire trucks Scott.

Full.. that'd be a total waste of valuable time if they sat empty.

I saw one of those stickers on the back of a septic tank truck one time
and another warning one that said something like "if you hit the back of my truck, you'll have $h!t in your car" - I thought it was pretty funny

Nope, just thought it was funny, that on another site somebody wanted to have a muscle car show and told us all to bring out our new mustangs for it. I just wanted to remind folks about where the muscle cars era started.

I got the best of both worlds, no complaints here

Couple of pics from my trip to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg. A few from our condo, one of the CROSS near Lenoir City, recognize it from my avatar, and I could not beleive gas was under $2, right off the interstate.
