Have you tried setting it to Tv when taking action shots and playing around with the shutter speed? That way you only have to worry about shutter and not so much about aperture.
I was just playing around with different settings without paying too much attention them this time around. One dog just lays around so I was trying settings on him, then the other dog which is playful came home and I used him after. I did a lot in the action mode and rapid firing them off. A lot of movement and a lot of blur there. I did try the Tv for a bit, but late in the afternoon and the sun was behind the trees. Not enough light to gain a fast shutter and a good depth of field.
Sunny weekend coming up so I may try some fall shots somewhere. There are also some swans up the street I want to get if they are around, and if the telephoto will be enough. (70-255).

Costume Party at a friends house
Thats me as Father Dave and My wife Sister D and yes we are catholic. I hope that was alright with the man up stairs....
That is a neat picture, how far away do you think the birds where from where you took the picture???
I get Tundra Swans wintering by my house, they should be here within the month, and hang out until February...
They are some of the main motivation for me getting this camera & the 400mm Lens.
I'll post a few photos later.

I shoot a Nikon D40. It's an awesome camera, and sells for under $500. Cheaper than a lot of point & shoots.
My 18-200 VR lens cost a lot more than the camera did.

We get Swans here too. I regularly hike in a wetland area where they winter.
I have a canon S5-IS which has a 12x optical zoom. 35mm to 432mm
