I was reading an article in Backpacker magazine earlier about bears, and one of the things I found funny was what a guy said about encounters with them. He said, you can't outrun them, you can't outwit them, you can't out anything them.

I think he's confusing things with the saying that bears can't run DOWN hill because of their shorter front legs. Yeah, that's a myth as well, matter of fact one that was mentioned in that article I was reading. Along with the myth of climbing a tree to get away from a bear (they are excellent climbers, especially black bears) and the myth that they are scared of fire.
Bears can haul ***, even downhill. They are actually faster than a race horse, they can sprint over 35 mph.
