You may not have been able to.
The December 10th eclipse will be visible from all of Asia and Australia, while only the western part of North America will see it (just before dawn).
But the article makes it sound like fullness was pretty close to when it sets so you would have to have a pretty unobstructed view to the West. Like on the beach. Now that would be an awesome pic with a full eclipsing moon dropping into the Pacific!
Todd said that the penumbral eclipse begins at 3:33 a.m. PST and the umbral shadow takes a small, dark bite out of the left edge of the moon at 4:45 a.m. PST.
For 66 minutes of the partial phase, darkness engulfs more of the moon's disk as it slides into the shadow. The partial eclipse ends and totality begins at 6:06 a.m. PST and the point of the greatest eclipse occurs at 6:31 a.m. PST.
Todd said the moon will be only 6.5 degrees above the northwestern horizon at the instant of the greatest eclipse, so find an unobscured view to the northwest for the best viewing.

This one is from last year's eclipse on the solstice at its peak. I'm surprised 2 Decembers in a row. They say the next full one isn't until April 2014.
